Hi folks, haven’t been on here in a while, but noticed a revolver I’m interested in. The Taurus 856. Anyone have one of these? A six shot snubbed nose .38 that appears to be about the same size as a Detective Special, or Model 10 2”. What do you think? Should I look into them more? Thanks in advance.

I can't speak from experience for the 856 line but one of my carry choices is an all steel model 85 blued that I like a lot. Taurus doesn't show the model 85 any more so the 856 probably replaced it.

Not a bad little pistol at all! It’s a little 2” barrel, don’t expect match accuracy past the bedroom door. It is what it is and it isn’t $900.

I bought my wife a blue one with black cylinder and barrel for out anniversary gift in September. We finally went and shot a few rounds through it yesterday and she very much likes it.

I like mine for <300 USD. Worth looking into further.

I have a stainless Taurus 856---have approx 400rds of .38spl 158grLSWC through it---still tight as a drum---shoots a little low (2-3in) at 10yds (a few swipes of a file will cure
that) but it keeps all hits inside the A zone of an IDPA target. The grip works better than it looks. Would use it for EDC or HD. I like it a lot. No lock.

Yes the 856 series replaced the 85 series. I have an older 85 with a 3" ported barrel. The accuracy is good at close ranges and it doesn't do too bad for me at 25 yards (distance sights are regulated at). I don't claim to be a great shot with a revolver at longer distances. Like any DA/SA revolver, the double action trigger pull is heavy while the single action pull is nice.

I ended up buying a 942 22lr to go withe the 85 for cheap practice/trigger time.

I have a 856UL .. Uses holsters for a Colt ‘D’ frame size , Charter Bulldog , Ruger LCR , SP101
My 856UL weighs 2 oz more than my 642
This is a Pic compared to a S&W Model 12 K frame

I have had the 85 UL, 605, and 856. I had over 7k rds through the 85, many of it plus p, it never failed me and I used it to defend myself against a rottweiler to devastating effect. I liked the trigger on the 85 for what it was as well.

I didn't put the 605 through the same paces, maybe 150 rds? Never misfired but the trigger was atrocious I got rid of it.

Then the damn Colt Cobra remake had to come out, and I wanted a 6 shot snub for EDC, I got a Taurus 856 all steel, trigger is in the middle between that 85 and 605, so serviceable but not compared to my Smith and Wesson. It's now my edc with 1200 rds through it. It shoots to POA with 158 grain ammo and others shoot low.

while i haven’t shot the taurus 856, the taurus 85 is rock-solid. of the budget 38sp revolvers, i.e. charter, ria, windicator, taurus leads the pack in fit and feel. new taurus have a lifetime warranty to the original owner if registered online within 30 days of purchase. my sister had to return an older, used, taurus 85 to its then florida factory for repair a few years ago. she paid shipping in, it was returned fully functional no charge in about two months.

i haven’t seen a bad report on utube of either the taurus 85 or 856. here is one favorable review by the firearm guy:

I'm searching for a 3" 856UL for my wife. Hopefully they will start showing up in decent numbers in 2021.

That would be a interesting carry piece .... hopefully things will start settling down and I pickup one also ... yeah sure ;-)
