Three weeks ago I purchased a Taurus Model 96 and had some issues with misfires and cylinder lockups (see http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=568496). I shipped it to Taurus to take advantage of their "Taurus Unlimited Lifetime Repair Policy™" Which promises that "we will repair your Taurus firearm FREE OF CHARGE for the lifetime of the firearm" (emphasis theirs).
Well after my newly purchased Model 96 went to Taurus Service, I received an email from them asking me to call them. I did and they informed me that they cannot repair the Model 96 as they have no replacement parts and offered me a new Tracker 990 for $150.
A Tracker 990 for $150 would be a great deal, except that I just spent $260 on the Model 96, along with $25 S&H, and a $20 transfer fee. Also I spent $20 shipping it to Taurus for service, and I'm sure when Taurus ships the new gun it'll need to go to my dealer for another $20 transfer fee. In case you're not keeping up, that'll be just shy of $500 for a new Tracker 990. MSRP is $442 and it sells on Bud's for $342.
I'm going to call Taurus tomorrow and see if they'll work with me on the price. I don't really expect Taurus to give me a new gun, but I would expect them to make things right.
All I really wanted was my Model 96 fixed. I could make more off of it if they just sent it back to me and I sold it at this weekend's gunshow but my personal ethics would make that almost impossible for me.
