I'm thinking about purchasing a Taurus Judge, bug I don't want the short barrel. There other barrel lengths.

Yup. The "standard" for the Judge is the 3" barrel and for the Public Defender it's 2.5". There is also a version with a 6" barrel. I think that's it though unless they came out with another length.

I have the blued, 5-rd 6.5" with 2.5" chamber and shoot .45colt rounds frequently at the range

I'm happy with the accuracy and it is fun to shoot 5 in double action as fast as I can ;) (keeps me at the reloading bench!)

The fiber optic front sight is easy to see and I'm happy with the performance of this gun

I've yet to test any SD .410ga rounds... But hope to soon

Take a look at the test results here. http://www.410handguns.com/taurus_spd_text.html

From the home page of that site, clicking on the pictures on the left gets you more details about that particular gun or ammo (they are not links to the manufacturer's site).

The longer barrel doesn't buy much for pattern (some are better and some worse in the longer barrel), and just a tad more velocity.

For me, the 3" is the perfect balance and isn't compromised (other than having a rifled barrel which we can't change).

I have a Judge poly public defender and to be honest once the novelty wore off I regretted buying it,.45lc is hard to find and pricey in my area as is .410,its gun without a real purpose, fun but that's about it.

A guy at the local range offered to let me shoot one. It would be just plain rude to refuse, so of course I had to shoot it. I actually shot it pretty well with .45lc, but other than as a curiosity, not a lot of appeal to me. I imagine a lot of people have sentiments similar to that of Likesguns - novel while new, then doesnt see a lot of use. Reloading .45lc isnt too pricey but buying new? Ouch. Same with .410.

At the end of the day one should keep in mind that the Judge has been a successful product for Taurus.

It has also been copied by S&W who I would guess felt the sales would justify the development and tooling cost to produce.

Not bad for a gun that serves no purpose and does nothing very well.

I opted for the Governor over the Judge because of the ability to use less expensive .45 ACP ammo. But I wouldn't diss Judge purchasers for the choice that they made -- variety is the spice of life. :)

And when all's said and done, I imagine the Judge would be able to acquit itself well in pretty much any fun or social occasion that might arise.

Pth22: I have a 4 inch barreled highly polished SS Judge chambered for the 2 1/2 inch 410 shell`s. My Wife got it for me as a suprise, for Xmas several years ago. And even tho I had never perticularly wanted a Judge, I have had a great time with mine. And I have learned to really like it. Mine shoots the 410 shell`s that are made for the Judge just fine, but not the ones made for regular Shotguns. They are very hard to extract from my Judge`s cylinder. I use my Judge as a Fun Gun and I have two holsters for it. IMHO I think it makes a great just out in the Woods just Walking Around Gun and also a great Float Trip Gun. I shoot for the most part the black plastic PDX1 shells made by Winchester I belive. And the Federal plastic 4 Pellet 000 Buckshot load. And both will shoot right to gather at 10 to 20 feet. I also shoot my 45LC 250gr reloads in my Judge quite a bit and at 20 to 30 feet, it shoots them very well. My Judge does not recoil that much, so just about any body can shoot it. And I use it for a PDG also and IMPO I think my Judge would do a good job at this, if call upon.

People either love 'em or hate 'em. While working in the shop we sold a bunch. I even bought one. Most lead badly with 45 Colt loads. Most don't pattern very well with shotshells. I sold mine and went back to my 624 Smith loaded with a pair of Speer shot capsules and four Lyman 429421 hollow points. About the same size, about the same shotshell performance and much better accuracy and less leading with the bullets.
My Charter Bulldog (original model) is about the same.
Won't bash 'em, just not for me.
Taurus makes them with way too big chamber throats for ball ammo and they won't change them, we tried and tried to get them to stop with the .462 and larger throats.

Checked out the Governor, but sadly it is not available in a 5 shot cylinder... a superb close quarters CCW handgun that is difficult to conceal... go figure. So acquired a small 2" barreled Public Defender Judge, ideal for CCW, and no need to deal with the Rube Goldberg internal lock. Doesn't have 45ACP capability but I have other Smiths for that.

Handloading is easy with 45 Colt and 410 brass (infinite choices here), carry ammo is Winchester 45 Colt - bonded - jacketed - HP, PDX-1, and buck. The surprise is accuracy, which is excellent at CCW distances. Fits perfectly in a custom-cut quick draw (S&W 396 NightGuard L frame) holster.

This small Judge is decidedly the most fun to shoot handgun on the planet.

IMHO, the free bore (distance of cylindrical bore to rifling) makes it a short range proposition. If your willing to accept the trade offs, they offer good close up big bore pistol power. I don't think you'd gain much with a longer barrel.

For those who wanted to know about ammo penetration and spread from the various Judge models and other .410 hanguns this covers the whole schmear. Or almost all of it. :) It's a great site.

Enjoy. End of Quote.

If you like and enjoy your Judge, fine.

I've got other revolvers to fill the bill rather than a Judge. I can carry snake shot or use the right bullets for defense or have fun with my revolvers.

I do understand that there are many who enjoy and have a valid use for the Judge what ever they may be. For them it works just fine.

Like any other firearm one has to know it's abilities and limitations. Stay within those and you cannot go wrong.

Why their big and do nothing very well I would but a real shot gun and a real pistol.
Just my 02
Jack of all trades; master of none. I'm with you; buy a good shotgun and a good handgun and master both.

Never been a big fan of the Judges.
The governor piqued my intrest, but not a whole lot.

I did get a chance to put a few rounds of federal buck through a governor that my instructor had during a pistol course a few weeks ago.

It was fun! I enjoyed it very much.

But I still don't want one.
I need to put together some shot shell rounds for my 500mag. I bet I could fit ALOT of #8 shot in there!

I kinda want a 6 1/2" barrel Judge.
The smaller versions are still massive, too big to consider for CC, but a big long barrel judge in a shoulder holster might have some appeal. While we're at it, make mine a Raging Judge so I also have the option for .454 Casull.

USAF, give it a full underlug, and good throats... With a 5-6" barrel...
I might look into getting it cut for moonclips for 45acp capabilities and have one very versatile hand cannon.

Like this, paired with a 410 coach gun by Stoeger, prettied up a bit:

You didn't mention cylinder length option. I would recommend the shorter 2 1/2" as pictured. The 3" however may be the more common 410 ammo you'll find. The shotgun shoots up to 3", and has since acquired sling mounts and sling.

Lacks moon clips for .45, but this is one of my "If I even win the lottery" guns.
