Taurs Model 605 .357 magnum

I was looking at a small little Taurus Model 605 today. I was really surpised at the size and weight of this .357. Any comments on it? Thanks.

I just bought one yesterday. I took it to the range today and found it to be a nice gun to shoot. Accuracy wasn't anything like my Ruger Blackhawk, but I could put five rounds into the kill zone at 30 feet every singe tiime. I plan to use it as my carry gun. i assume that is what you are looking for, given your comments on size and weight.

Yeah...

I put it in my pocket and it was smaller and seemingly lighter than my Bersa .380. 5 rounds of .357 in such a small package seems a nice alternative to 7 rounds of .380. The gun felt good in my hand. That's something too. :D Thanks for the information.

I also have a Bersa .380. I like the gun a lot--I just ran a couple hundred rounds through it at the range this afternoon--but it is a bit too heavy for CCW. The Taurus fits nicely in the pockets of my cargo pants. And I agree that I'd rather have 5 rounds of .357 or even hot +p ammo than seven of .380.

But I still enjoy plinking with my Bersa.

I have a 605 with CT Laser Grips on it. Although I personally carry something with a longer sight radius for my primary almost all of the time, I like the 605 and consider it my BBQ gun. I have shot lots of CorBon158 LSWCHP +P and Win 110 JHP through the little gun. It is revolver safe and reliable, handy, packs a punch, and conceals easily. A speedloader in one pocket and a couple of Speed Strips in another, and I do not feel unarmed. It also makes a great BUG when I am carrying something bigger. Not as light as wifey's Taurus Ti 38, but still very packable.

Best to ya,

changed grips for better concealment...

My model 605 came with the larger soft rubber grips, which for the most part, are excellent for soaking and handling the recoil of magnum loads. However, for concealment, I replaced the longer stock grips with the shorter boot grips off my mod 85 (605 is same frame size as 85) for a slicker draw and a smaller concealment profile. Since I'm not particularly recoil sensitive, the shorter grips were a perfect compromise. However, if you don't like a 3-fingered grip, best to stay with the longer 4-fingered stock grips.

Great carry gun....good trigger, light for a .357, reliable, and you can't beat the legendary stopping power of five .357 mag loads.

Best wishes......

Speed Strips are produced by Bianchi and come in packages of two. They are a soft rubber "channel" that will hold six 38/357 cartridges in a straight line for flat concealment in a pocket.

After ejecting the empties, you can load two at a time (in every frame size I have ever tried) by inserting two in the chambers and "twisting" the speed strip. Having a barrel down angle on the revolver will cause the newly loaded rounds to "drop" the rest of the way into the chamber. At any point you can repeat with two (or one) more round(s) or close the cylinder, preparing the weapon for use.

It is also possible to do a "tactical" reload with only two (or one) round(s). After opening the cylinder and putting the revolver in the barrel down position, you begin by pushing the ejector rod part way up. Usually the fired rounds will remain "up" allowing you to remove the fired rounds. Then you charge the empty chambers from the speed strip, close the cylinder, and continue the fight with a fully charge revolver.

I bought a set of boot grips for my 605 and would switch as necessary. Then I got the CT Laser Grips, and I they are about 3.5 fingers of grip, providing good recoil management in a very concealable package.

As I said in my earlier post, the Taurus 605 with CT Laser Grips, a speedloader, and a couple of Speed Strips equip a trained person to deal with most situations calling for a handgun.

I just got a 605 and am very happy with it. The only problem I am having with it is that H&K speedloaders don't seem to fit quite right. Is this a problem with the H&K design or do I need to change the grips?
Will leather for a J frame work for it? How about a Taurus 85?
thanks

After having owned a Taurus M85, I much prefer my Ruger SP-101. Handles reoil better. Durable as all get out. Most accurate snubby I ever shot. And I have never experienced the gun not being able to pop the cap.

Mine has been fine...once I had it serviced at the factory due to a timing error that caused failures to fire. I noticed this only after putting a couple hundred rounds through the new gun. Also, it came back with the hammerlock pin sticking out so it dragged on the sideplate, so I had to fix that. It also developed some cylinder endshake so I fitted a shim washer inside the cylinder, and that has worked nicely. I also improved the trigger with a lighter Wolff return spring, but the original mainspring is absolutely required for reliability.

I have one and I am not sure as to wether I am satisfied with mine yet. I bought it new and it had timing problems out of the box. When trying to fire in the single action mode on the one out of every 5 pulls would fail to sufficiently turn the cylinder to it locking position resulting in a failure to fire. After firing about 20 rounds and working the hammer several times it seems to have stopped doing it. I informed the dealer I bought it from he said he would be more than happy to send it to taurus but that it was probably a bur or some debris in the cylinder on one spot that caused it. I still need to fire more rounds through it though to see if it will prove reliable. I was dissapointed that my new out of the box gun could possibly have to be sent back at my expense to get it to work properly.

I had one minor problem with mine--the screw on the cylinder-release latch backed out and fell out in my pocket once. I put some gun Locktite on it and had no more problems. Another issue I had was cleaning the gun after shooting .38 Special ammo. The carbon buildup between the end of the case and the forcing cone was a bear to remove, and it made inserting .357 rounds difficult. The other problem was the weight.

About a year ago I bought a 642, which is now my primary carry gun. It's a .38, so the carbon buidlup isn't a problem, and it's much lighter than the Taurus. I liked the Taurus and became surprisingly proficient in shooting it, but it became a safe queen after I bought the Smith so I sold it.

I use the H&K speedloaders too, and it's doable. Just angle them a tad, don't try to insert them as far as you normally would, and gravity will do the job for you.

As to the leather, I have the 605, an 85, and a 94. Aside from barrel length, and different grips, they're all the same. I took the small rubber grips from my 94, and swapped it with the larger rubber grips off the 605 (thanks for the idea, 22luvr). The 85 has the rosewood grips. They all work well in the same holsters... as long as the muzzle end of the holster is open to account for the longer barrel on my 605. I have a Galco holster with a retention strap that is a little tight on the rubber grips, but it seems to be stretching out just fine.

It's my primary carry and has over 1000rnds thru it. I have both styles of grips, but put the boots back on for pocket carry. Only issue I had was a weak hammer spring at about 400 rnds. My dealer replaced it under warranty.
For pocket carry, I use a Desantis Nemesis, and for OWB I use a Bianchi Black Widow. Rides nice and high, can't see it at all even with a medium length t-shirt. I shoot 38's in mine. It's a good gun.
