Taurus PT-1911 range report

8 round mags have a tendency to have the 1st round dip down and catch on the feed ramp. I bet with 7 in the same mag it does not do this. We've crammed 8 rds. into where 7 were designed to go and in some clips/guns this does not work well. Many will not use 8 rounders for carry. The Novak and Tripp mags address this by using a slightly extended mag. The Chip McCormick is also slightly longer than a stock flush 7 rounder. If you gun will run 100% with 7 rounders or 7 in an 8 rounder I would not worry about it. I would not start working on the gun yet.

What do you polish your feed ramps with? I have a dremel, but don't worry I am not going to break it out and dremel the crap out of my feed ramp. It does have an attachment for polishing though.

No need for a dremel.

Unless you have some major flaws to remove. I've found that Flitz and some elbow grease will take care of most feed ramps.

I bought some Magtech 230gr. RN today and the load fine in my Taurus and my S&W. I then put my 200gr. JSWC's in both and the first round would not feed, it jammed as it went in. I then grabbed the 5 rounds of identical 200gr. JSWC's that were exactly the same except that I did not seat the bullet as far down. The first round went in fine. Looks like I may have been seating the bullet too far down. However, I still like the idea of polishing the ramp. Thanks.

Thats why I tried with fully loaded mags. I have always heard and subsribed to the whole "one round less" thing, but mine function just fine packed to the gills. Really, I was most concerned to see how it would funtion with just random, odd rounds (weight, JHP, Ball, old, new) in a mag, and it passed that test with flying colors.

just a thought for you.....

if you haven't already, after inserting the mag. try slingshotting the slide to load the first round.

I read a post some time ago that suggested 1911's like that.

I haven't owned a 1911 for over 15 years though, so I'm just passing on hearsay.

I'm going to save my pennies and hope they come out with a Commander.

JSWC's that were exactly the same except that I did not seat the bullet as far down

I seat 200 Gr. SWC's at 1.260 to 1.265 ( Hornady fmj-ct, Ranier, Precision) and they feed fine. In some guns much shorter will cause problems. I am seating Berry's 185 Gr. SWC at 1.190 and it feeds fine.

I may get lambasted for saying this but I have never measured the OAL on any of my reloads. I usually compare my loads to a factory load. From now on I will be measuring the OAL.
