My LGS is selling a Taurus 1911, I believe from the picture and description it is a B model (although they have completely screwed the pooch in their flyers before on models and descriptions).

They advertise the regular price as $630, but are selling it for $550. Its got the bobtail grip safety, adjustabel sights and front and rear slide serations like basically all Taurus PT-1911s I have seen.

I am thinking of buying a 1911 during this anniversery year, and was looking mainly at a Springfield Mil-Spec, Loaded or Range Commander, and I still may get one of those eventually, but is $550 for the Taurus something that is too good to pass up?

In my opinion its hard to go wrong with the Taurus 1911's. You really do get a lot of gun for your money. I would have no problem "pulling the trigger" at $550. Its a good buy!

I have had a Taurus 1911 for well over a year now, probably closer to 2 years. I have not put thousands of rounds through it but I have put a few hundred through it. It has never skipped a beat.

They are excellent for the money. Some of the details have that Taurus "not quite finished" look, but it could also just be the 1980's styling affecting me. Other than that, they seem well made, and the feature list is unbeatable for the price. Since it's a 1911, if something breaks and you don't want Taurus to fix it, you can probably do it yourself or get any competent gunsmith to fix it.

Taurus make s a good 1911 and I'd say you ought to be okay with one, though I admittedly have not firsthand experience with them.

Not for naught, but considering that a bobtail is supposed to facilitate easier carry, shouldn't it have some kind of snag free fixed sights as opposed to adjudtable target sights?

I don't plan to carry it and would rather have the adjustable sights.

The SA Range Officer, is the same way though, bobtail with adjustable sights.

I am sure there are bunch of others like that as well.

I think you mean beavertail.

A bobtail is where they cut a little off the bottom of the grip, like this...

Look at the bottom rear of the grip.

For 100 bucks more you could get a made in the USA STI Spartan, Taurus has had enough problems with QC of late I would be leery of any of their firearms.

I've owned a PT1911 since December '07. There are three typical "dings" against the Taurus:

1) Shoots low with the Heine sights - True - but what I've learned is the front sight is regulated for the white dot (center hold) and not the typical 12 'o clock hold traditionally taught. That said, I just purchased Novak Tritium sights for mine as replacements. I actually liked the Heine Straight-8s, but they weren't night sights. Beware as the Taurus dovetails are non-standard. AFAIK, only Heine and Novak make aftermarket sights that fit the PT1911. I wish Taurus had used a standard dovetail...
2) Finish is not durable. I have not found this to be the case. Mine does show a little holster wear, but I've carried it most of 2 years now. Most blued pistols will show holster wear. If there's no wear, you aren't carrying it enough:)
3) Ambi safety loosens up after several hundred rounds - True. I tightened mine once and then broke it the next time I attempted to tighten it. It now wears a Wilson combat safety. No more problems.

For the money, its hard to beat. The pistol has been very accurate and very reliable. I have roughly 1800 rounds through mine. Granted, not a torture test by any means. I'm happy with the pistol.

Why is it that everyone always goes for the "well, for just a little more, you could have a ......"? Heck, for a few grand more you could do away with all of the "fit with a hammer, and finished with a coarse file" excuses for a gun. Get a Korth.

When I go to purchase a gun, I've already done my research, and am going to inspect the gun prior to buying it. Thoroughly. Due diligence, and all that.

As for QC issues, just browse these forums. You'll see complaints against Sig, HK, Taurus, Colt, S&W, and just about any other brand out there. Many complaints .
