I just bought my first handgun yesterday. I bought a .40 cal taurus pt 24/7 pro. I would just like a little bit of input, whether or not anyone thinks it was a good choice or a bad one.

Depends what you want from it. The 24/7 line is generally considered very reliable and an excellent bargain at the modest selling price. You can get into endless arguments about going for the .40 caliber vs a 9mm (much cheaper ammo) or even .45, but hey that's your call. Few people doubt the .40 is a capable round, but some will point to its cost/performance equation. Fair amount of recoil in a smallish gun like the Taurus for some, but if you are not all that recoil sensitive you'll be fine. Don't know exactly which model you got but assuming it's one of the new SA/DA triggers that should be pretty nice. Personally I find their DAO triggers a bit long and poor feel, but then I'm not a DAO fan so not best qualified to judge there.

All in all yes I'd say most people would be perfectly fine with a 24/7 as a first handgun. Simple, cost effective, reliable, decent all round performer. Go shoot it a bunch and let us know how it goes!

I really liked my 24/7 - but I wanted something for concealed carry and it's a little big for that; traded it in.

But I could hit what I was aiming at - great grip and easy control.

I didn't have the Pro, just the DAO. Anyway, I loved the gun!! I had the local shop build me a REAL guide rod, and got rid of that crappy plastic one. The stock plastic was *Bent* from the get-go. Anywho, my only gripe was the slide seemed a touch soft. I started reloading the hell out of that thing, and to it's credit, it took very hot reloads with stride. But the bulk of the shooting was factory ammo, and developed some odd wear, and peening on the slide. Never had an issue, and didn't feel the need to send it to Taurus. At least around here, most people HAVE guns, they don't SHOOT them. That gun took 1500 rounds of boarder patrol ammo, and about another 1500 or so of various other sorts. All this in about 4 months, with never one failure.
Enjoy it, if you want some dies, I still have mine, will make you a helluva deal on them. RCBS and Lee trimmer.

I handled one at a gun store one time. Nice gun. Fantastic grip and the trigger was decent. I would have bought it but I really didn't have a need for another plastic carry gun at the time. The price was right though.

I'm considering a Taurus too. I like the small size of the Millenium Pro, but I absolutely love the rubber grips on the 24/7. It'll be a tough decision. :D

The 24/7-PRO Compact (or whatever they actually end up calling it) should be a great carry gun. Size of the Millineum with the 24/7 trigger and if the price is right .....

Wally,

The current run of the Millennium Pros actually have the exact same trigger mechanism as the 24/7 Pro ...

They are basically a chopped down version, in both barrell and grip.

From what I am reading on the Taurus Website, the sub-compact will be the same as the pro, but with a shorter barrell..

By the way - this morning when I just pulled these specs - it appears Taurus has FINALLY revamped their website!

The current run of the Millennium Pros actually have the exact same trigger mechanism as the 24/7 Pro ...

Good to know, I'll have to check them out next gun show. I thought they'd change the name when they changed the trigger like they did with the 24/7 becoming the 24/7-PRO.

Whats the purpose of making a compact model of an already compact gun but leaving a full size grip on it?? It's been my experience that the grip is the harder part to conceal. Give me a smaller grip and the same length barrel and I'd be much happier. At lease the 24/7 looks like a very slim gun. I may have to give it a second look.

If you have to sit a lot while carrying, the virtues of a shorter barrel quickly become obvious. And if you don't have to move around a lot, the larger grip is not a real problem to conceal, so some people like this combination to not lose a few rounds capacity with the compact grip.

Well that depends. Weapons with a thick slide will dig in a little with a longer barrel. I carry a full size hipower and with it's slim slide its very comfortable and the barrel length doesn't factor in. I have a Bersa 9mm that is shorter yet thicker in the slide and it is much less comfortable to carry. The Taurus has a very slim slide from what I've read. I'd bet it would benefit from the shorter grip more than the shorter slide. Thats just my preference of course. I worry less about whats in my pants than what may be sticking out and printing through my shirt or coat.
