Taurus PT-145 Pro earns "best buy" rating from Guns Test's Magazine!

It looks like Taurus has finally shaken their reputation for building shoddy guns. In a 5 gun comparo, 3 glocks ( 2 45's and 1 45 GAP), the XD subcompact, the S&W chief, and the Taurus PT-145 Pro, the Taurus got the "best buy" rating.:D The XD subcompact got the "our pick" rating, which means they thought it was the best gun in the comparo, price not considered. The Taurus was the best bang for the buck.:D With the $120 price difference between the Taurus and the XD, I'd pick the Taurus.

I have the PT-140 Pro DAO, I'm thinking the comments they made about the PT-145 Pro would also apply to my gun. These guns are quality and I really like mine.

In the 20 years I've been aware of Taurus firearms, I've never heard anyone refer to them as "shoddy."

I had no reservations about buying a PT-145, and it has lived up to my expectations.

$120 for me is history in a few trips to the range, but yeah I can see that angle. Congrats on your pt140dao.
 
i was looking at their site and it looks like it was the PT145 Pro in stainless steel that was tested...but i could be mistaken as i haven't subscribed at read the full article yet. i wonder what ammo they were running through it??? from what others have said they may have gotten different results if they used WWB :uhoh:

anyways...that is good news regardless as the PT745Pro & PT145Pro are basically the same :) .

glad to have just picked up mine and can't wait to bust some caps at the gun range....
 
My PT145SSP is supposed to be here today, I wrestled over the 745 or the 145, but they share the same slide & basic dimensions, the only real difference is in the width of the grip. I can load it to less than capacity if weight is a problem, but having 11 rounds of .45 should negate the need to carry a spare clip. I also ordered a DH721OT holster to carry it OSW.
 
I have a PT 745 I'm thinking of selling, nothing wrong with it, I just don't care for such a small 45, I like my 38 snubbys.:)

My PT145 Mil-Pro stunk right out of the box with everything I fed it. Misfeeds, failures to fire and spontaneous disassembly. The latter was what prompted me to make "trade bait". I fired 3 or 4 sessions of about 200 rounds each. The most I made it without a malfunction was about 80 rounds. A stark contrast to my 3 Taurii revolvers which were excellent firearms, 2 of which belong to friends of mine right now.

Another friend had a 24/7 which he was fond of... 2 in fact, but I believe one had to be sent back for warranty work...

Taurus is a very innovative company, and is definitely bringing guns to the market that are cool, serve really good purposes, work well, and are inexpensive to boot. IIRC, they're assisting in the dumb-gun technology project though so they can sell out gun owners at some later date - is that still up on their website?

And you didn't read the documentation that Taurus would have made good on it, at no cost, if you sent it to them?

I have NEVER heard of a 145/745 coming apart. How is that possible? There's nothing that CAN come off unless you take the slide off or fully depress the magazine eject? :confused:

That is the question. I used to subscribe but they contiually proved themselves to be idiots and then wrote about it in thier own words.

Hey, I'm with the Donald... everybody deserves a second chance. Is somebody here actually vouching for them?

I''ll vouch for Taurus all day long! I believe they make excellent firearms at very attractive prices. I have owned several Taurus guns, all of them have been excellent, no problems whatsoever. Granted, all of the taurus guns I have owned were built after the year 2000. Just because a few people report back that they have or have had junk taurus guns, doesn't make me doubt the brand. Every gun maker has a few lemons. I agree 100% with what gun tests said about the PT-145 pro, its an excellent gun. Matter of fact, I'd put my mil-pro right up there with my XD, it would hang with it no problem.

I personally very much enjoy reading gun test's magazine, I just renewed my subscription.:neener: They dont take advertising from gun makers and they test guns that are bought off of the shelf, no special factory massaged guns that the other gun rags test. :neener:
 
Ive got a MilPro PT 145 DA/SA, excellent gun....Im about 600 rounds deep without a hicup. Everyone I let shoot it wants to buy it from me.
 
Have you satisfied Taurus owners gone over to www.unitedforums.com and clicked on the Taurus Forum and told anyone about your purchases or experiences? There is also Taurus Talk at MSN. As a PT111Mil/pro and PT22 owner I am glad to see positive Taurus threads from the actual users and not the trolls or bashers. Just thought to say enjoy your purchases and have fun. This all is just another haven for Taurus owners as well as a source of info. So many people out there have no real world experience or have ever owned Taurus products or will, yet denigrate the whole company. Then, I also own Rugers. Must be a Knuckledragger Sasquatch to have both Taurus and Rugers and enjoy them.
 
agree with the article...

after reading the entire article yesterday i took my NIB pt145pro to the range for its initial run. i only shoot 100rds of 230gr Magtech ammo, but that was enough for then (i dashed out after i dropped the family off to her sisters house for a short visit). the gun shot flawlessly, no FTF, FTE, or light primer strikes...pulled the trigger and every time it went BANG. i wasnt shooting for accuracy at this point at all because its only 100rds in and i dont feel a gun is broken in untill at least 300+ rounds. Smurfslayer, you must have a previous generation gun or just a plain lemon (what gen. was your by the way?).

nevertheless i did notice that head shots fell right on target with a nice grouping, roughly 3" at five to seven yards. centermass (torso) placement was shooting low. all within a 3 to 4 inch column, and nothing out side the center area. im not sure if i was shooting low because of the targets hanging low (TopGun shooting range has notoriously low hanging targets :mad: , great facility though :) ), my sighting being off (not used to these heinie sights), or if it is the newness of learning the .45ACP round (im a .40 guy and this is a new regular round for me). basically i dont attribute the low shooting to be a problem from the firearm itself.

two things are certain, (1) you have to practice with this lil hand cannon, and (2) this is definitely a CCW/street fighting gun...not something you want to take to IPSC to when gold with. however, i do want to try it in IDPA. double tap follow ups were great by the way, seemed to have no problem there at all.

just my .07 cents, from someone who isnt an expert in anyway...but has some experience with firearms and real experience with the pt145pro.

oh yeah, i just subscribed to gun-tests magazine as well. i find them to be a good practicle read. no less reliable than web forums....:neener:

While shooting, mid magazine the magazine release, magazine and remaining ammo spit right out of the gun. The round being chambered was chambered fine, but I had to recover the release. I inpsected it, had a friend go over it and we both felt it was best to not continue shooting(that gun). This was just the final straw, I'd had feeding problems with 3 different brands of FMJ, ammo, 1 type of HP, reloads which worked fine in my 2 other .45's through both magazines. Failures to fire occurred on 2 types of FMJ and a couple of my reloads. I am pretty sure all of them fired when they were "2nd struck".

And yes, the thought occurred to me to send it in, however, the PT series has had more than a few detractors here on THR and TFL. It was a hopeful carry rotation gun and it just couldn't be trusted. The lifetime warranty doesn't do a whole lot for me while the mfgr. has the gun.

I replaced it with a <brand witheld to avoid any brand wars ill will> gun in the same caliber. It isn't as concealable, but has been much more reliable.

It's been a year or 3 but they used to have on their website that they were assisting in development of a gun that can only be fired by the owner. Ostensibly for NJ citizens, their LE would not be required to use it. Not anywhere I can find on their site now. I wonder what ever became of that...:scrutiny:
 
i wouldn't say that is a LOT narrower. the difference is only in the grip frame which is thinner but i didn't think it was that much when i compared the two, but it is noticeable. as far as concealability for CCW goes, i doubt that it makes much of a difference at all between the two. i would say that if you have very small hands and grip the thinner frame better then go with the pt745, but if it doesnt make a difference then why not have the 3 more bullets. ;)
 
I'm not a Taurus fan. The two I've owned have had issues...mostly trigger quality issues, but my 22lr wheelgun has self adjusting sights :banghead: And recently, I had a chance to check out a 44 mag that looked okay but the trigger still had a lot to be desired.
Best buy??? Maybe cost wise but IMO, there are better values out there
 
I purchased a Mil Pro PT145SS in Oct., It is now my carry gun. It has Fed, Fired and Ejected everything I have put in it.

It is very comfortable, and fits my had great.

I suspect a lot of the disdain for the Taurus brand came about 30 to
35 years ago when they first started importing into the U.S. I know that's
when I first realized what junk they were. My first and last experience was
trying to shoot a Taurus copy of a S&W Model 36. I think it spit as much
lead out of both sides of the cylinder as it put out the end of the barrel.
And accuracy was not an issue, because there was none. I don't think
that gun could have hit a 55 gallon drum at 10 feet.

But I don't "bash" Taurus anymore, because it seems they overcame their
shortcomings and became a force in the gun market in this country. And
I applaude them for that. I still don't own one (yet), but I can't ignore
the fact that a lot of people love their Taurus', so they must be making pretty good guns.
