Taurus PT 92 AF Questions

I am not familiar with this handgun. I would like to know about the quality. I have read some online reviews, but would prefer to hear from some owners. I would like to know value for used, but in good shape...80%? Also, it does not have a clip with it... availability and cost would be of interest to me. The only reason I am asking I think I might be able to get it at a bargain. I am a 1911 owner, but would be interested if it proves to be a bargain. The owner has not put a price on it at this time. Thanks for any info you might offer.

Maybe around $200, especially if actually is 80% and with no magazine. New ones can be had on sale in my area for around $359. Magazines will hover around 420 plus or minus a few dollars depending what brand and where you buy them. Beretta mags will not work w/o modification.

Huh? Magazines are readily available anywhere for these pistols. You can pick up 17-round Taurus-marked factory mags, or the Mec-Gars (the best) for about an average of $24.95 from just about any source. Stay away from Pro-Mags, USA or Eagle. Taurus factory mags or Mec-Gars can be had for 20 to 30 bucks, new, on-line or at gunshops and gunshows.

200 to 250 smackers for a used PT-92 would be a good deal. Disassemble and check for rust; check the bore with a light, function check everything ...

As for the PT-92 itself, it's a worthy pistol. Do a search in the autoloader forum, you'll find many positive opinions in previous threads, many recent.

I've had one since 1991, one of the first decocker model PT-92AFS pistols; totally reliable and more than adequately accurate. It compares favorably with my three Beretta 92FS pistols in reliability and accuracy, though it's not nearly as "polished" in terms of fit and finish. Great pistols.

I had one for a couple of years, just sold it a few weeks ago to pick up my first 1911. The PT-92 is accurate and very reliable. I probably put 3500 rounds down the barrel of mine in the time I had it and never had a single jam or missfire of any kind. When I first got it I did have to 'bump' the rear fixed site to the right just a hair, but it was very easy and right on from then on. I just got the itch for a .45acp so I had to let it go.

I just got rid of mine today. I bought it used for $239 this past summer, and I traded it back to the dealer for $200 for a sight for my AR. I figure the $40 loss was a pretty good one because I don't think that I could have gotten more than $150 any where else.

Fun pistol to shoot, but I just didn't like the grip size. Magazines, not clips, are relatively cheap.

Although I have had very mixed luck with Taurus handguns (about 50% worked-50%didn't and Taurus couldn't get the ones that wouldn't work right) the PT-92 is an excellent buy. It is built on Beretta machinery in Brazil. The internals aren't finished quite as nice as the Beretta externally they are very comparable. The slightly rougher internal finishing hasn't affected performance. Mine has been totally reliable through 3500 rounds of all types (it's hard to beat the Beretta open top slide design for reliability). It's very accurate, has a good trigger, holds 17+1 rounds of 9mm compared to the Berettas 15+1. And to me the frame mounted safety allowing cocked and locked carry is far superior to the slide mounted Beretta version. I did alot of research on the gun before I bought. Their were only a few and very few at that negative reports on the gun. I'd snatch it up.

Anytime I see posts like this, I wonder if they're through a timewarp from some other decade, or some other reality where prices are different.

I've never seen one that low unless it looked like it'd been used as a hammer.

i owned a taurus 92 and hated it. the front sight blade was tilted and the accuracy of the gun was horrible. the gun looked really nice though. mine held 15 in the clip and one in the chamber. i wouldnt ever buy another taurus ever again. cheap gun,,,,you get what you pay for.

Well, Kemo Sabe, I think many owners of this pistol would disagree with you. Inexpensive, compared to many other autoloaders of comparable quality, but certainly not "cheap." Too bad you got a lemon, but I suspect your experience is more the exception than the rule when it comes to the PT-92. It's a worthy pistol.

Hey Dave, you can get excellent 17-round Mec-Gar mags for the Beretta 92 now.

I like mine.

I've had a 92 for about 12 years (I bought it used). I couldn't guess at how many 1000s of rounds have been through this gun. It's reliable and fairly accurate. Not my favorite gun by a long shot, but I would trust my life to it if need be.

I've had 2 at diffferent times. I also have other Taurus handguns. IMO, the 92s are the best of what Taurus makes. My older PT99 went well in excess of 9000 rounds with no malfunctions that I recall. I traded it, not b/c I didn't like it, but b/c when the 3rd gen S&Ws came out, I just had to have one. Later (1995) I bought a PT92 which is still with me and I'm not getting rid of it. It too has never had a problem. I still take it out now and again. Both of these are among the most accurate 9mm pistols I've ever had. They're not at smooth as my Beretta 92FS, but then again, my Beretta cost me double what my PT92 did. As stated above, stick with factory or Mec-gar mags and you'll be ok.

BTW, when I got my PT92 in '95, I paid $350 for it new.

So how much would a 80% Taurus PT92 with no magazine sell for in New Hampshire? Finding good deals on guns too is largely due to putting in a lot of time and effort looking for them and being knowledgeable enough about them and pricing to make a good buy. I do understand regional difference mean a lot too.

The key is location. Around here in Oregon I'd say $200 maybe, I bought a real clean one with three mags for $250, and that was at a gun show so no super deal, but Oregon's a gun-friendly state and prices run low. In MA it might be $500 due to the scarcity of decent handguns due to their screwed up laws.

The 92 was the first handgun I bought, I've put a few thousand rounds through it without a single problem. With 17 rounds of good JHP in the mag it makes a fine self defense gun, it's just too thick for me to conceal easily. I took a fine file and opened up the rear sight, that makes it a lot easier for me to shoot well, and put some Hogue rubber grips on it. The only annoying habit it has is nailing you in the forehead with the empty brass from the last round in the magazine for some reason.

I have a PT-92AFS stainless/Nickel that I bought almost 14 years ago. It's NEVER jammed, it has always worked, and even after the mags sat fully loaded with 15 in each one, for over 7 years, when I took it to the range after a 7 year hiatus, all three worked without a hitch.

My 92AFS does not have the decocker. I guess it came out before they made that option standard. But I wouldn't trade it for all the money in the world. It's mere presence has saved my life 3 times. Besides, they don't make the wooden grip panels with the Taurus Medallion anymore.
