KewToo, you can also search by name of post, unsure what thread you were looking for. Found your reply about sending a lot of ammo down range and everything being good. I also saw your other thread comparing it to the Walther PPS. That thread was -- Taurus PT 709 SLIM 9mm anygood?

*** Range Report ***

Yes. I have taken the pistol to the range. I cleaned the gun when I got it and went to the range. I shot 100 rounds of WWB through it. No failures of any kind. No FTE, FTF, Stovepiping, nothing. It was flawless.

The fit and finish on the gun is very good. I like how the mag follower makes very positive contact with the slide release lever. When I rack the slide it feels very smooth and confident.

I took the pistol home, cleaned it and returned to the range a few days later. Again, it was flawless with another 100 rounds of WWB. I focused more on my accuracy this time. I'm not the most accurate shooter, but on one session of 14 rounds, I hit the bullseye out to about the size of a golf ball at 25 feet with 3 or 4 rounds close around it.

The trigger has a good deal of take up in it until you feel the tension where you need to give it that 5 - 7 lb pull before it will break. I kind of like the extra take up since I plan to pocket carry this. I found that the Nemesis pocket holster I have for my PM9 works great for the PT709 also.

Its good to see more units are moving flawlessly down range. Have you started testing any SD ammo? Interesting to see the pocket holster fits, and nice pictures of the size comparison. The 709 fits my hands a lot better than the PM9 added bonus, I can correct my shooting to the left easier with adj sights. Thanks for the info gwlammers

I can't wait till i get mine back from Taurus. I think mine just has a light spring or a too short striker (i was getting FTF's). Other than that - it's a fine shooting gun, and more importantly - it's got a great feel to it. It's too bad Taurus has such bad assembly line processes. I believe the design to be very good, bad execution on this and many of the newer models.

Taurus seems to have problems with lite strikes....

My gen II PT-111 always had lite strike issues with WWB... never with UMC or SD ammo.

I traded it in for a gen III PT-111, because I really wanted the SA trigger. I set up to load 9x19 around the same time.

I already had a lot of Win small pistol primers that I use for .38 spl, so I used them on my 9x19 reloads as well.

guess what.... the other week I had my first lite strikes with the new PT-111 on my 9x19 re-loads....

again... not with Trailblazer, UMC or SD ammo.

I've always heard that Win primers were on the harder side.... but they certainly go bang 100% of the time in every other gun I load them for.

My reading has led me to believe that the problem is the finish on the machined hole that the firing pin slides in.

After much searching, I found disassembly instructions (sans pics :( ) to take out the plug and spring and pull the firing pin.

My time has been totally consumed with a barn building project. And on top of that, my club has had both the rifle and pistol ranges shut down for almost a month.... :( so no time to play time for me lateley....

My plan is to do the detail strip and put lapping compound on a pipe cleaner and run it back and forth in the hole to polish it up.

If only I can find the time....

Flushing the firing pin hole with brake cleaner seemed to help on my previous PT-111....

if the detail strip isn't to much of a pain (the instructions I found warn of a spring that goes "boing" when you release the plug) I'll add that to my regular cleaning routine.

I've read two reports of lite strikes on the 709 now and I suspect it's the same issue.

I'm an ameture hobby basement machine shop guy.... and am learning the hard way that a good finish involves a fair bit of work and often it's time consuming hand work....

Pulling a part right off of the CNC mill and sending it off to the assembly dept. will likely not give the smooth finish needed for sliding metal parts. The last 20 parts machined before the reamer is changed may have a finish that is degraded just enough to cause failures.... esp. after you get a little carbon in there.

Taurus has good designs at good prices.... and I've happily owned three of there products. They do seem to be falling down on the final inspection, hand touch up category, however.

It's a shame, because they certainly could do better. It's not rocket science, but rather quality management and going the extra mile.

jumped in the bandwagon

well after months of deliberation! i finally jumped in the bandwagon of buying my first ever taurus. being a glockman 27,23,22, i admit it took me a while before i even looked at this taurus. got it at the high caliber gun show yesterday. out the door for $371. (not bad):D it has to pass a torture test before it can even be considered as a backup for my G27.
