I'm looking at the Christmas gift to myself, and I'm debating revolver vs automatic, specifically a Taurus M85 snubbie in 38SPC or a PT709 in 9mm. What are your thoughts?

Should I do what my heart wants and get an XDs 45?

The Slim has a long trigger pull. Easy to conceal though. I personally would explore other option if I could do it all over again.

I've had a 709 and a 740, couldn't have been happier with either, both accurate, both slim and lightweight, both great guns, only got rid of when needed money, sadly

Based on the election results, maybe a semiauto is in order (revolvers will always be available).

And well, my only Taurus Model 85 experience is a superb 1992 Model 85-CH ... pre-MIM, back when Taurus still made their revolvers on the old S&W machinery. Simply a superb pistol as far as fit/finish, reliability and accuracy.

Can't speak to current Taurus revolvers.

Got a couple really nice PT-145 Mil-Pros that have been great (excepting the egregiously long, springy trigger pulls), reliable and accurate -- based on that experience, I might buy a newer Taurus.

My 1991 PT-92 is still goin' strong -- great pistol. I'm not a Taurus basher, even though I favor Colt's, S&W, and SIG ... and even have a couple custom 1911s ...

Same here. I owned both the 709 and 740 and had zero problems with them. Excellent quality compared to pistols in its size and price range (PF9, LC9, etc).

If you are looking for a decent semiauto that is very concealable, I would highly recommend the 709. But if you have a bit more money available, just go ahead with the XDs. I would only recommend the Taurus if you were on a budget.
