Taurus PT92 and +P ammo

Just couldn't resist this used PT92.. looks like somebody fired 50 rounds through is tops, or the finish is soo tough it doesn't wear off the slide rails. $300 and now I can compete in 3 IDPA divisions ;-).

So, I'd imagine that +P is okay in these, being steel framed and all.

Anybody know of replacement rear sight that'll fit the factory dovetail? I have a feeling the plastic rear sight might get trashed over time.

Any other little tidbits that would be good to know? (I already figured out how to modify Beretta 92 mags ;-).

Oh yeah, where's a good place to get an extended mag release? I tried brownells, no luck there.

I'm quite certain that the Taurus PT-92/99 uses an alloy frame, not steel. Having said that, I've put many +Ps through my used PT-99 without any problems (G-A 115gr +P+ GD). I would avoid a steady diet of +Ps out of most any alloy-frame, but a few hundred rounds of it won't hurt (hasn't hurt mine, anyway).

Like you, I received an excellent deal on my used Taurus ($220, NRA "very good" condition, though it appeared new). It's seen around 1,500 various round since I've had it, not a single malfunction yet. I'm thoroughly convinced it's one of the better deals I've had on the purchase of a used firearm.

Hmm, seems aweful heavy for having a alloy frame....but I didn't really check that out and I think it's lighter than my GP-100 ;-)

Taurus 92 and 99 receivers are aluminum alloy. I would not fire a lot of +P ammo in any gun. Any time you increase pressure, you are going to accelerate wear, regardless. Limited amounts of +P are not going to kill your Taurus, but it will last longer with standard pressure 115 or 124 grain ammo.

My PT99AF definately has a very lightweight alloy frame. Easy way to check is to remove the slide from the frame. If the slide weights twice as much as the frame, it's alloy for sure. As far as I know... all the blue/black Taurus guns are alloy framed and the stainless guns have a steel frame. If the frame happens to be of steel (such as the stainless guns) the frame will weigh considerably more than the slide.

As for the +P ammo, I'm shot mostly S&B ammo in mine but have also fired plenty 1,000+ rounds of +P Gold Dots and +P CorBons.

OH yeah, and just an FYI.. CDNN has Mec-Gar 10rd magazine for the 92..on sale for $9.99

Considering the Mec-Gar beretta mag I modified feeds perfectly, I picked up 4 (no here yet).

I got some of those cheap mags and they work great. I think better than the factory magazine. Got them in about 5-6 days.

Brownell's has an adjustable rear sight for the PT92. I got mine in a great deal but want an adjustable sight and found one there. I think it is on page 256 in Catalog #55. If not that page, around there somewhere. It is made by MecGar and they sell it for around $60. I agree with the sentiment about the plastic sight. I've already banged mine enough that it looks bad.

I shot my PT92 last weekend in an IPSC shoot and really enjoyed myself. I have to work on longer range shots though. I had a couple comments about my "Beretta", but told them that it was the Taurus.

I'd like to have a smoother trigger, but for the money, I won't complain too loud.

I HAVE A TAURUS PT99/92 WITH JUST SHY OF 10,000 ROUNDS THROUGH IT.

The frame is doing just fine, thank you very much, but the slide went through two rear sights and finally the rear sight pin trashed the slide itself by wallowing out its' hole.
A new slide courtesy of Taurus fixed up in fine style.
A second new PT92 slide fit even better and shot better than the first two PT99 slides. An ever so slight drifting of the PT92's rear sight put it dead on the money, and the old PT99 has been a PT92 ever since.
Once a Beretta target trigger was fit to the PT92 it shot like the finest of target pistols, then I got a new CZ85Combat and haven't shot the PT92 since...for shame!!!!!

Try CCI Lawman 115 grain ball ammo through your 9mm pistol. You will experience almost +P effects without its damaging pressure.

Others have covered the frame material so I'll skip that.

I've put over 5,000 rounds through my PT92, many of them 115 gr @ 1,300+ fps. It's still going strong and has yet to have a malfunction.

Anyway I have a Taurus 92 from 1991, I lost count at 18,000 rounds should be about 25,000 now I think. Used it in IPSC limited for 18 months using 147grn bullets at 985fps which is a PF of 144 or so. Which is in the +p range for almost 7000 rounds before getting a SVI in 40. I started loading it down to normal PF in 124grn for IDPA. I am almost done with another run of 146 PF, 124grn rounds I loaded up for steel.

I didnt change the recoil spring soon enough the first years I had the gun, it did more to wear down the frame then anything else. I used the standard spring and it has worked for everything great.

I also swapped out the mag release and really like the one I have. Got it from Taurus for $29 bucks I think.

I have heard you can use these for the Taurus also and they make the trigger pull smoother and a little lighter.

If its a newer one with the plastic guide rod, I would change it to steel, but thats just me, I have steel guide rods in all my guns.

It must be an older one, guide rod is all steel.

I might have to order one of those trigger return springs, sound interesting...in fact, while I'm at it.. ordered new return spring, trigger bar spring 3-pack, hammer spring pack and some spring for my GP-100 ;-)
