I got a taurus ultralight 38 in stainless. Anyone have any experience with this model? I was wondering, when I shake it I hear a disconcerting rattling sound- is this just the taurus floating firing pin..? The barrel is stamped 38 special, so I am guessing no +p?

Here is a link to their Ultra light revolvers. They all looked to be +p, but you should check for yourself.

All my Rugers have a slight rattle, due to the transfer bar mech. I'm not sure about the Taurus, but if it shoots good it's probably ok. You could try to dry fire it to see if it functions ok.

Mine's not stainless, but it's an Ultra-Lite
It shoots well, it's accurate and it handles +P just fine.

It's not the firing pin, because there is (or should be) a firing pin spring. Most likely it's the transfer bar safety, which should rattle. If you have doubts have a qualified gunsmith give it a quick once-over. ;)

Got it in a trade on the uber cheap, so may get it checked out or give it a go at the range and see how she does...reminds me of the 637 smith...

The rattle is normal. In fact, when I bought my first j-frame I was concerned with the rattle and called S&W. The tech I spoke with told me the rattle is normal and he gets a few calls a week asking about it.

The centerfire versions are safe to dry fire, but put snap-caps (best) or fired cases (second best) in the chambers or the firing pin will eventually mash the firing pin spring.
