Smart Guns
I know as firearms owners we have tendencies to develop strong resistance to change, especially when it comes to tools that we use to defend our very lives! The evolution of firearms technology in the development of so called "Smart Guns" at this time is no longer in question; these weapons are being developed, and there will be those in our government that will attempt to limit our future purchases to these firearms. In my opinion, I think rather than resist the development of these weapons, and cause financial difficulties to the companies that are developing them, we should encourage and provide consumer input to the development of these devices. My main concern is reliability. I still want my weapon to fire every single time I pull the trigger. If the bad guy gets a hold of the weapon and cannot fire it, that's an added bonus, but my main concern is myself or my authorized users to be able to use that weapon in defense of life. Companies like Taurus need to understand the issues that are the main concern to gun owners regarding "Smart Guns". It will only be through our cooperation and encouragement that they will produce weapons of this nature that will still be suitable for personal defense.
As far as technology goes, there are still those of us that will not use an autopistol for personal defense. I think that decisions of this nature are highly personal, and I do not berrate anyone that makes the decision to trust only revolvers to the defense of their lives, but I want to illustrate how resistant we all can be to new technology. I myself will not be the first to use a "Smart Gun" as a primary defense weapon, however, I can see a time after thorough development where I would consider one for personal defense. Just as autopistols needed time to develop and mature, so will this new form of weaponry. I think we should nuture it to become more reliable more quickly, rather than to be forced to use ill developed weapons that nefarious legislators will no doubt demand us to adopt.
