My gf and I moved to WV in December of 2019 and in 2020 I purchased a new Ruger Wrangler 22lr revolver. As expected, I paid tax on the gun.

Recently, a law was passed exempting guns and ammunition from state tax. Great, but I don't need another gun and have plenty of 22lr ammo, and everything else I make myself.

Soooo, I went and bought a brick of primers a few weeks ago, and they didn't charge me tax on the purchase. When I asked why there was no tax, the response was "The governor passed a law banning tax on firearms and ammunition."

So I'm left wondering if WV has no tax on reloading components (bullets, brass, powder, and primers) because they are considered "ammo" or if the LGS simply made a mistake.

Anybody have an answer?

Pray to the good Lord you live in a free WV state with good Ladies and Mountaineer Men.

Here is Seattle: Ammo is taxed 5 cent per round and a 10% sales tax

Guns: are taxed $20 per gun for •Safety training* and 10% sales tax

FYI, you are all paying an 11% Excise Tax on your ammo, pistols, and revolvers. 10% on all other firearms. It's levied on the manufacturer, so you never see it. Unless you are a manufacturer...then it sucks, badly and is a constant drain on resources. Reloading components aren't subject to the FAET AFAIK.

It’s a tax worth paying!

Yep! It’s called the Pittman-Robertson fund or Firearms & Ammunition Excise Tax. You can read a bit about it here:
