Can anyone give me information on Thompson's Center's Weather Shield coated barrels? Are they as good as they say? or is it a sales gimmick? Have there been any problems thus far with them? I am looking to get a barrel that doesn't corrode as much as my bbl, and don't know whether to go with the old reliable stainless steel barrel or take a chance on the new weather shield barrel. Any advice???

It is a painted on coating that is only applied to the outside of the barrel. Bare steel on the inside, so IMO, i'd much rather have Stainless barrel.
If there is corrosion in your rifle, you need to look at the way you've been cleaning it after you shoot.
Mind telling us how you go about cleaning your rifle? Im sure the forum can help you out on this problem very easily and keep you happier and your rifle cleaner.

Thanks Frontiergander. The corrison is my own fault. I intentially foul the barrel with one shot before each muzzleloader season. Our muzzleloader season comes before rifle season, so if I don't score with the muzzleloader, I am out the door the next morning with the rifle, and don't let up until the end. If this runs into the busy Christmas season, it can sometimes be two months before I clean the muzzleloader. I have the Systems 1, which takes time to clean. I am hopingthat with a newer muzzleloader, like the Omega, I will at least be able to clean the barel out quickly if I have to let it set for a while.

You may want to try finding the new black powder sub called Blackhorn 209, its non corrosive and you have shoot it all day, leave in the the safe for months and it wont have rust or corrosion. Its expensive though, $30+ for a 10oz jug.

Ok I bought one on July third of htis month ( Omega Z5 w/weathersheild). It shot great was really simple. I cleaned it thoroughly after 20 shots and put it away. A week later I decided to do some more shooting with my brother and there was surface rust coated down the barrel. Oh boy was I mad! I called TC and they were really nice only bad thing is they dont have a 1-800 number... They said it definately should not do that and to send it in. I am going to be talking to one of the guys in charge today actually though about it because I broke in the barrel and sighted it in then it does that... I would like them to send me some more sabots also if they would. I am a bio-chemistry major in college, and with that said when they coat barrels most of the time I would imagine they electoplate them. I have done this before in lab and working in the lab I know personally things can go wrong. I just happened to get lucky and get a poorly coated barrel... They coating should protect the steel on the barrel from the elements minus the bore. I have a Remington 700 XCR that is coated with the trynite and that works great! The coatings should not be a gimmick. If by chance you run in to trouble like I do you now know what to do lol. Everyone says TC is one of the best companies to work with and so far they have been. I mean you can not go wrong with a lifetime warranty. At first I was scared about letting it sit there and rust without cleaning it up because I didn't want to get stuck with it before I found out if I could send it in. She told me no not to worry its got a lifetime warranty. So as we speak its in the corner rusting away lol. I will tell you how it all plays out here at the end after today when I find out.

Even if the Weathershield finish is a special paint, it's still puzzling how the rust began.
1. If the finish wasn't initially applied properly, or the barrel wasn't prepared right, then the finish is defective from being misapplied from the onset.
2. But if the finish was initially applied properly and the corrosion didn't start until after you fired it, then maybe the heat from shooting it created microfissures (cracks) in the finish which allowed oxidation to attack underneath it.
That suggests a problem with the finish itself and not just with the process of how it was applied.
Maybe a blue replacement barrel would be preferable?

Ok after talking to them all I have to do is send it in. This is proving more of a challenge here in NY with uneducated shipping people... but they said they would even send me a pack of sabots too. They said the finish is some sort of a ceramic finish thats all they could tell me so its painted on some how. The guy said this is the first time he has ever heard of this happening. Must not have been coated right, although that theory of articaps on the micro-fissures is interesting...

I'm glad that they took care of the problem and that you're satisfied. TC guns aren't inexpensive and if they didn't have such good customer service, I wonder how many more defects that we would all be reading about on a more regular basis.
Even replacing your sighting in sabots shows how they went the extra 9 yards just to satisfy you. And they threw in a TC hat too? Now they've turned you in to a walking billboard for them.
If I ever see anyone wearing a TC hat, I'm going to make it a point to ask if it was received in exchange for sending a defective gun back to TC! T/C WeatherShield
Were they able to fix your weathershield defect? I am having the same problem out of my T/C Triumph with weathershield. A week has almost passed since it was sent back to the T/C factory. I was wondering how your problem was resolved. Were they able to repair the rust damage and fix the coating or did they have to give you a new gun?

I think that TC usually replaces the barrel if there's a Weathershield problem.
The other parties can be PM'd for more specific info., but I'm pretty sure that they're not the only ones that it's happened to since they posted.
