Can't you or he just mill or sand off the import marks?

Maybe. I'm not sure. Removing or altering the serial number is obviously forbidden but I'm not sure about import marks. My gut reaction is it would be illegal.

With that said, I will use a FEG Hi Power as an example. My PJK-9HP is serialized on the frame but the country of manufacture and import information is all on the slide. If I replace the slide with a genuine FN part have I violated the law? I haven't altered or changed the serial number but have now removed import info.

It does not matter if you swap out the the slide because the serialized frame is the gun. Just like the imported force matched BHPs you see all the time. The serial number on the frame which is techinically the gun is the only one that matters. I believe you can remove a secondary import mark. I have heard people say that CDI sales put the import mark on the barrel very lightly and then sanded it off once it was imported. Other people say they are in the magwell/grip area. I never verified that but I have handled a lot of CDI sales guns where I could not find the secondary import marks.

Like most things involving the ATF you will find varying information. Over the years what I have gathered is that it is not illegal but it is not encouraged. In early 2000s IIRC there was a letter in circulation that made it sound like ATF was treating the importation mark like a serial number because the requirements for the secondary import mark mirrored the serial number marking requirements. Here is a link to that info: https://www.atf.gov/file/61776/download

Then there are letters like this which state the ATF does not regulate the removal of an import mark.

The frame appears to be stippled.

Yes the gun is stippled with Mr. Yosts Sharkskin Stippling pattern.

Here is complete list of the build:

-Complete detailed inspection of frame, slide, and all components. Detailing of internal surfaces, moderate frame/slide rail fitting
-Yost Professional Grade sight system, with the rear sight machined from 4140 Pre heat treated steel, serrated at 50 lpi and contoured to the rear of the slide. The standard notch dimension is .135”W x .120”D, other dimensions are available at no charge upon request. Front sights are dovetailed. Front sight with 24K gold line.
-The slide top is flattened and serrated at 50 lpi in my proprietary curved arrow point pattern.
-The grip frame is high-cut under the trigger guard, allowing a lower position in the firing hand
-The magazine well is hand beveled by file
-The magazine catch is angled slightly rearward and re-serrated at 30 lpi
-Yost proprietary trigger travel reduction mods
-A custom strong-side safety is fabricated using the factory Browning part as a base.
-Commander hammer
-Best quality trigger job, using a Browning factory hammer and a tool steel sear. Includes new trigger return spring and 28# hammer spring. The trigger face is rounded and polished
-The barrel throat is polished and the muzzle is recrowned
-The extractor is polished and tuned for reliability
-The front strap and rear of the grip frame are textured with my proprietary Sharkskin Stippling-
-A set of Craig Spegel’s Cocobolo wood grips fit to the frame.
-The entire pistol is dehorned, softening all sharp exterior edges
-Any supplied magazine base plates are dehorned and refinished with the pistol
-The entire pistol is reblued with polished slide flats and satin matte frame, parts and slide top.
-Nitre blued pins, screws, and accents.

What did it cost?

Or is this one of those “if you have to ask” things

Mr. Yost does not publish his pricing. If you are looking to have one built you can inquire and he will send you the info. His work is in the ballpark of other top BHP smiths like C&S, Don Williams, Novak and Garthwaite.

But I don’t know what that is, so give me and the rest of us a ballpark nunber. This isn’t a national secret

The SRT package runs about $1700 and is, I believe, Mr. Yost's "basic" package. It includes:
  1. reblue
  2. dehorn
  3. serrate top of slide
  4. new sights dovetailed in
  5. feed ramp polish
  6. stipple frame
  7. basic trigger work with new sear--no reset mods
  8. bevel mag well
  9. build extended thumb safety
  10. mark slide with "SRT" logo
  11. G10 grips
There are probably some things I'm missing but that should be the majority of the stuff as part of the SRT package.

Please note that the pistol pictured above is not mine. Also, the gun appears to have some upgrades that aren't part of the standard SRT package. These include the French borders on the slide, the high gloss polish on the pins. There may be additional mods inside.

Depending on the package and the mods you get the SRT starts at $1895 and the Signature Grades run upto $3300+ depending on if you replace the barrel and choice of finishes.

Great. Now I want that gun too.
