I am looking at the White Oak Armament 18" .223 varmint upper. My goal is to be able to turn my 26" LBC super varmint .204 into a close in, lighter, cheaper shooting, coyote gun. I love my LBC rifle but everything that makes it a great varmint rifle conspire to make it not the ideal walking/calling/coyote rifle.

So what can you all tell me about the WOA uppers? The above is what I wan't it for so if there is another brand I should be looking at let me know. What kind of accurcy (sp) should I expect with factory ammo, I know I know I will try a bunch to see what shoots best but a ball park guess would be cool. I just need min of coyote inside of 200 yds, some times way inside.

Thanks.

White Oak makes good/great stuff...but... I , myself would opt for a lighter barrel profile and maybe a 16" barrel. If you are only shooting at 200 yds, the 16 will be easier to carry, yet still give you punch needed at that range ( with decent bullets ) to get that coyote.

Or, while its a 20" barrel...http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/62257-1.html...its still gonna be lighter than that WOA upper.

i dont know if its what the o.p. is looking for, but thats a helluva deal on that predator, especially considering it comes with headspaced bolt and carrier, and 1/2" risers.

it would also be within the weight range of the white oak setup.

i dont know if it would be as accurate as the white oak, but i bet its a legit 3/4 moa setup.

might hafta look into that myself., thx bfoosh

Thanks for the links. That YHM upper is a good looking unit but it has a few things that I just don't really need ie four rail hand guard and iron sights and flash hider/comp. Now when I need a upper for three gun matches it might get the nod.

I had looked at the bushy but I think I want to be under 20", I wasn't sure if I would get enough out of a 16" tube so thats why I was looking at the 18". Is the 16 enough to get good terminal results using most likely 55 grain loads? I don't "need" a short upper that will shoot 2'' groups at 400 yds but I do like nice tight groups as much as the next guy, henc the LBC rifle.

The reason I originally looked at the WOA is that pretty much every thing I read about them said they build an accurate upper. And the price seemed to be in line with most the others.

Thanks all.

My department uses a 16 inch rifle as our patrol rifle. Plain jane heavy barrel Bushmasters for the most part. They get about 3100 FPS with 55grn ammo. Easily shoots 1.5 MOA with good ammo.

A 16 inch barrel will be plenty for coyote hunting out to 200 yards.

I haven't owned any white oak uppers, but I've shot a couple. They are nice and are more accurate than I am. Generally speaking, any QUALITY AR will get you 2" or better groups at 100 yards with good ammunition. I have a plain jane Rock River 16" HBar chrome lined barrel that will print 1" groups with Hornady 55gr V-Max rounds.

Still in all, the White Oak rig will be more accurate than most and their equipment seems to be a great bang for the buck.

I wouldn't jump on a complete Yankee Hill upper. I was a big fan of YHM stuff. Nice gas blocks, muzzle devices and handguards. Based on my previous experience with YHM products, I ordered a stripped upper from them. It turned out to be a disappointment. The face wasn't anything near square and I mean no where near. The bolt channel also has a bunch of high spots in it. I don't know. This may not be typical, but for the price there are others I'd look at first.

Being able to hit a target the size of a coyote at 200 yards won't take any special piece of equipment and you won't need a long barrel either. There actually isn't that much of a velocity loss when going from a 20" to a 16" barrel anyway, although the shorter barrel will suffer from more muzzle jump. For your stated purpose, you could probably pick up just about any AR and be happy with it.

Amerexican,

Is that code valid for other Spikes uppers? Specifically, the .22lr uppers?

Thanks!

White Oaks are some of the best - my DCM upper was a White Oak. Great attention to detail and a great guy to work with.
