this is off the top of my head, please do not read as gospel-
ALSO- the A2 added a 'brass deflector' to the upper- a bump behind the ejection port to bounce ejected brass away from the face of left handed shooters- just remembered that.
In the beginning, there was the M16 (nothing)
after a very short time, some improvements were added- a forward assist, a chrome lined bore and chamber, a different flash hider, a storage compartment in the buttstock for a cleaning kit and some ribs on the lower receiver around the mag release.
after twenty-some years, the USMC wanted some changes- interchangeable hand guard halves with a round profile, made of a more durable plastic, a stock 5/8" longer, a tighter twist to the rifling, a heavier barrel, a slightly different flash hider, and a finger bump on the pistol grip. it also had a 3 round burst instead of full auto. the rear sight was adjustable for Elevation as well as windage, and the front sight went from being 5 clicks per turn to 4 clicks per turn.
there was rumored to be a A3 model, with all the same features of the A2, but retaining full auto- I never saw one, but we heard about them.
the A4 is the same as the A2, but with a removable Carry Handle riding on a Picatinny Rail.
You will also see "M4 Feed Ramps" referred to va. "rifle feed ramps"- here's a thousand words on the difference:
