If you've got a little time and want to give a relatively new shooter some advice...pick my next gun for me!

Here's what I have:

Ruger 10/22
P3AT - My carry gun
SP101 - Wife's carry gun
12ga Shotgun
Mosin Nagant

I have a C&R, I eventually want to own a Mauser, Enfield, and Garand. It doesn't have to be my next purchase, but I 'm wondering if I need to get the Garand from the CMP before they are gone. I'm also thinking I'd enjoy having an AK. Cost and value is a consideration. I need to be able to justify spending some savings with the fact that in a pinch, I could sell this gun and get most of my money back. I don't mind buying used. I'd like to spend 400-500 or less, but I could go to 1000 I suppose. What do you consider a must own gun from this point?

Thanks!

Buy a S&W 586, Model 19 or some such similar model of .375 with a 4" barrel.

A lifetime of fun shooting .38 specials plus you'll be a better shooter, and doubles as an excellent HD/SD weapon.

YMMV

Thanks for the response! How will it be very different from shooting 38 specials and .357's from my SP101 revolver?

Yes...I am reading about those at this very moment and I have shot my friend's AR. Lots of fun. What the least expensive ammunition available for those? Availability of inexpensive ammo is a consideration. I like to shoot a lot.

Buy an AK.

For $300ish you're getting an ultrareliable and fun, while not terribly accurate, little gun. If we get another AWB, resale value will go up, yeah.

I haven't shot my AR in a long time, but what a great piece. I want to get another, only chambared in .308 this time.

AK74

Get an Arsenal if you can find one in 5.45X39 I just bought 1080 rounds in sealed tin for $151.00 which brings my total to ........ ahem never mind.
The Arsenal is probably one of the nicest AKs made and they have a factory in Arizona that puts in the required USA made parts to legalize the imports from Arsenal in Hungary or wherever they are from over there. Trigger is great, no slap and the rifle is more accurate than most of the AKs out there.

PokerPro,

If you like an AR platform, you should get one. I recommend that you also get a dedicate 22lr upper (not the adaptor.) This way you can also plink for less.

You can't get anything cheaper that a bulk 22lr, can you?

-Pat

ak's are cheap and will be high on the next "you can't have that" list.

Thanks both of you. So if I get the dedicated 22LR upper, it will be simple to transform it back and forth between .22 and .223?

Kfrans, you mean a weapons ban? So not only might the value increase but I might not be able to buy one in the future?

More the "not be able to buy one in the future" part than the increase in value, but yeah.

Unsolicited financial advice follows.....Re-reading your original post, I'd suggest not buying anything at this point if this
I need to be able to justify spending some savings with the fact that in a pinch, I could sell this gun and get most of my money back.
is the case. Save your dough until hocking your guns isn't the way you'd dig yourself out of a financial pothole.

I appreciate the financial advice. It might not change your opinion at all, but it helps me justify gun purchases to be able to say that a gun in the safe is as good as cash in the safe. I have only sold one gun, but I sold it for 10 bucks more than I paid for it and because of that, I don't have to explain myself very much to my wife when I bring home a new toy. We're not talking about selling a gun when the water heater breaks. I'm in business for myself and things are generally boom or bust. If the business goes under and we are having trouble feeding the kids, I'll be able to go to my safe, sell my "fun" guns, just like I might dip into savings or into our cash reserve. That's the great thing about the internet is that you can now buy and sell things at will, only paying for their depreciation (taxes and transaction fees, if applicable)... Your thoughts?

You should probably get your hands on a CMP Garand because:

1. They won't be around forever.
2. They are quite possibly the coolest guns ever made.
3. They curreltly sell from the CMP for about $450 and if you get one in any kind of decent condition, you could sell it easily for $800-$900 if you need to.
4. The Lake City and Greek M2 Ball ammo that the CMP currently has is pretty good stuff and is still relatively cheap.
5. BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG PINGGG! (See reason #2).

If you can afford it try to find a good Colt Python. They are great shooters and are a good financial investment right now. One of the few that you most likely will get more money for it when you sell it than the cost of buying it..

Get a decent M1A rather then the Garand. The 14 fixed a couple of weakness' that the Garand suffered from.

Also you want the best in a carry weapon? Get a 1911 type .45. Still the one!
Les Baer's are supperb. But even the Springfield .45 are decent. For the M1A try Fulton Armory.

AK 74s

The problem with the 74 is the same problem that the M16 suffers from, it's a carbine cartridge in those weapons (I am not talking about tuned bolt action rifles), it cannot reach under real conditions.

I had access to all kinds of .223 and tested them thorughly through 15w,16s, s, 249, etc.... and had to file a report on them. Shooting the American .223 rounds at the time, was fine for the role that the Carbine had originally been intended for, a short range carbine. But in the winds and weather of the west, it can't beat the wind, rain, snow, etc...

If you want realistic reach you need .30. IN fact .30 will not only give you reach it will give you more consistent stopping power.

As far as the 74, got my first one in 1981. Got several cases of ammo with it. I needed a replacement barrel rather rapidly and the Soviet weapons have never been known for any kind of serious accuracy... even their sniper rifle was mediocre compaired to ours. And yes, we sent Bob Brown a picture of the 74 being shot.. back in 81, out here in Sunny Ca.!

as much as I love the AK I would get it later. I think that they will be available for quite a while to come unless there is an all out ban on them.

I would get an M1, its a good long range gun. Fun as can be to shoot its one of my favorite rifles. Be warned though that many of the rifles from CMP need a lot of work and you will want to take it to a competant M1 smith. Many of the CMP guns have worn barrels which will function but aren't as accurate as they should be.

Then get an AK which is also a super fun gun to shoot. Not super accurate as before mentioned but they are very reliable. My only qaulm about them rcently is the price of ammo. I used to be able to buy 1000 rounds for $100. Now its 500 rounds for $100.

Granted .30-06 M2 ball isn't cheap and surplus won't last forever.

Buy a Jennings J-22, since you don't know guns, and have none of YOUR OWN opinions on what you want, TRUST ME, this is the ABSOLUTE FINEST big-bore handgun money can buy... get 2 before they go out of circulation!

You know, I don't know much about guns but must of what I've been able to learn I've learned here. That being said, what I have to endure in order to gain this information is getting quite ridiculous. Every time I come here I either get shat on by someone like you or I observe someone like you ****ting on someone. It's ridiculous. I log off everytime discouraged by the fact that by being a gun owner and Pro 2A enthusiast I'm associated with such classless, rude individuals that would, behind the cloak of internet anonymity, insult someone they've never met. I can say with relative certainty that you wouldn't insult me like that if we were in the same room. (Though you might). I usually stay away a couple months until the bad taste in my mouth is gone. By then I've convinced myself that it was just one bad apple and that it's safe to jump back in. Every time I am proven wrong and it's not even the same poster...

I don't know what your angle is but if it was proving that when it comes to guns, you're smart and I'm stupid, then you've done your job. Before it's all said and done though, there's no telling how many young shooters you've tainted. It's frightening that you've got 700+ posts on this ID alone.

As for MY OWN opinions, I plan to offer them to the kind people in this thread that made suggestions. I plan to do EXTENSIVE research, and report back with pictures and a description of what I decided to buy. I'm sure there were people that thought my original post was stupid, but they moved on. So just stay out of my thread, OK?

Thanks in advance.

We're a friendly community here - please stick around! I'm not sure if Hemi's post was meant in jest or not, so I won't claim that. I would say some clarification is in order. :scrutiny:
