Thanks, everyone, for the help. After carefully pondering the posts, and taking a good look the stuff iin my barrel, I decided to give the J&B a try. Worked like a charm. Whatever was in there is gone.
Note that I was a rookie cop in the days of 158 grain round nosed lead, so I've seen my share of leaded barrels. This didn't look like lead. However, I think it had been oxidizing in the uncleaned barrel for several months. It was an unequal deposition on one side of the lands. The guy I got it from had said he only fired 50 rounds of WW white box 115 grain hardball through it. This fit the theories in your posts.
Anyhow, we put about 100 rounds of 124 Rainiers through it Saturday and it shot great and cleaned up effortlessly. Trigger takes some geting used to after years of Browning Hi-Power shooting, but wasn't bad. Thanks Again
