I attended the Tennessee Handgun Carry Class yesterday, taught by a Madison County Deputy Lieutenant which lasted 8 hours. There was a wide variety of handguns brought to the class to qualify with from people with different levels of experience and skill.

Let me say that yesterday was a vivid example of how practice pays off. With 5 shooters on the line at a time, it was easy to see which ones had shooting experience and which ones haven't.

The ranges were from 3 yds to 10 to 15 to 25 yds. I might also add that those with little or no shooting experience did well enough to hit an assailant at a reasonable distance, which shows how easy it is to defend oneself with a handgun.

I was slightly embarrassed as I was in the first group using my Glock 19 and my target started with one hole and would slightly expand as the distances became farther, I was shooting awesome and people were looking and pointing. I just kept trying to supress the smile and hold in my pride.

There were two other shooters both using Glock 22's which shot exceptionally well, better than myself. I felt better that I wasn't the center of attention any longer.

Overall, it was an informative class, designed to teach people with little or no handgun experience the basics of handgun part nomenclature on up to handgun safe handling practices and to the safe and effective firing methods, the legal ramifications and the affects of the aftermath of a shooting.

I didn't learn much from the class because of my knowledge, but do believe it was useful to the others. They showed a state mandated video in which the Officer called the permit to carry a handgun a priviledge which didn't sit well with me.

I don't believe in carry permits, I attended the class to head off future problems that might occur if I ever was pulled over and searched.

I echo your experience amprecon in that carrying should not be a "priviledge" but rather a God-given-right.

I qualified with a Makarov and you should have seen the crowd gathering around at the end of the shooting session to check out the commie-pistol that did not choke!:)
