Does your state restrict the type of CCW handgun you carry?

I've heard that in some states the CCW license will list the handguns (make, type, serial #) that you are allowed to carry. Which states are those?

When you take the shooting section of the CCW course in North Carolina the instructor lists on the form what type of handgun and caliber you used - but once you get your permit you can carry any legal handgun.

In the CCW class I help teach we encourage our students to qualify with both a semiauto and revolver and list that on the forms. We do this to provide a little bit of protection (?) in case they ever have to defend a justifiable shooting against some over anxious DA who accuses them of using a handgun "...they were not trained with."

In TX you can have an "SA" rating which means you can carry a semi-auto or revolver, or you have an "NSA" rating which means you can carry only a revolver. It's a little silly but they determine it by what you qualified with so most people qualify with a semi-auto even if they plan to carry a revolver.

However with the permit you can carry any gun of that class and it is not limited by ownership, make, model, etc.

There's one for the record books....a Texas gun law that is actually more restrictive than other states.

AZ doesn't care what you carry, where you carry it, or how many you carry. One buddy carried a Class III MAC 13 .380 in an SMZ shoulder rig, 10 rounder in it, two 30 rounders opposite side, with a Colt 1911 strong side, Seecamp .32 front pants pocket, and a .22 pen gun in the pocket. Totally legal...

CA lists the specific firearms you qualified with, and that's all you can carry.

Local jurisdictions can limit it even further, number, caliber, capacity, etc. One jurisdiction limits it to a) .38 caliber minimum, .45 caliber maximum, b) five rounds minimum capacity, and c) no .44 magnums.

Another specifies no SA autos.

On the other hand, one jurisdiction says, if you can qualify with it, you can carry it.

Maryland doesn't waste time restricting the type or caliber of handgun you can ccw.

Since there is no ccw in Maryland for us poor serfs........ :banghead:

Armoredman - I hope he avoids deep water?

I can understand (to a degree) not allowing S.A. pistols. We discourage our students from using them for CCW unless they have a great deal of experience with them. For newbies or persons who you know aren't going to practice, a DA revolver, DAO or DA/SA pistol is the best choice.

NM used to list specific types and cal
ie.
Auto
9mm/45

Revolver 38/357/44mag

Current changes in process will make it by type and allow any cal. equal to or lesser than what you qualified with
Qual with .45 auto, then all lesser autos authorized
Qual with 45 revolver, all lesser cals authorized.

Now I'll only have to qual with 2 weapons instead of a dozen.

In Utah, when I got mine, I was trained with a revolver and semi-auto. It doesn't matter the make, model or caliber, I carry.

In Las Vegas, my cousin has to be certified on the particular gun he carries, and can only carry the guns he is certified on. I don't *think* they list the serial numbers of the gun, just the make/model/caliber.

When I applied for my first Pa. License (1987), I had to list the weapon I would carry and give a reason for wanting to carry. When I got the permit it said "various" under weapon and "Self-Defense" under use.

Sarah Brady fixed that for us. Now when you apply, the sheriff doesn't ask. The weapon box is no longer on the permit. Sarah also caused Pa. to clarify it's position as a "shall issue" state. Maybe I should write her a thank you note.

Pa. has no requirement for any training prior to getting a permit.

In las vegas you can only carry what you qualified with. I just went and qualified to carry two additional guns costs $20 each plus $25 to the state. I also cant carry them until they get around to sending my new card about 14 working days they said. I keep thinking it might come early, but it wont its been 8 days so far and nothing.

In AZ it is truely a Concealed Weapons Permit. You can carry just about anything that isn't prohibited by law for general ownership. You can carry full-auto, shotguns, swords, knives, batons, etc concealed along with the usual pistols and revolvers. None of this namby-pamby restrictions to certian makes/models/calibers. If you qualify with a .22lr revolver you can still carry whatever you want.

Sumpnz , you shoulda seen the nice old lady at one CCW qualification time, when I was assisting, as she brought a revolver her son lent her - a Ruger Red Hawk 44 MAG! She did not qualify....until someone lent her a 22 revolver.
Guys, the buddy of mine with the hardware is NOT the guy I have seen with the most armament on at one time, not close.
Timmy came to work one day with his black leather trench coat on, and underneath was.....(I may not have all the model numbers right - it was several years ago)....
Glock 22 and 27, both in "tactical thigh rigs", EAA Witness 45 strong side, Bersa 380 weak, Smith and Wesson Model 10 .38 Special should weak side, and slung under his strong arm was a folding stock AK clone with 75 round drum and 37mm flare launcher. Yes, it was comletely legal. No, we did NOT allow him to carry all that hardware on the truck....just two. The rest stayed in the vault that day....
Most I ever carried was three, a EAA Witness 40, a CZ70 .32, and a Taurus 22lr mouse gun. Felt a little foolish after a while, and put the Taurus back.

Michigan

Carry what you choose and how many you choose. No restrictions other than it needs to be a handgun. We get a "CPL", concealed pistol license that covers handguns, nothing else, so all other knife/weapon laws still apply.

FL is one of those fine, fine states that has a concealed WEAPONS liscense. . .hand gun, long gun, sword, club, chainsaw, whatever, so long as it's concealed.

You can get the CWP with either a DD214 from the military, or go through a 4 hour class, which culminates in going to the range and showing that you can load and fire a gun, ANY gun in the general direction of a target.

When I was in NV, I had to qualify with specific handguns and could only carry those concealed (although I could open-carry anything I wanted).
