Tennessee License to Carry Applications Skyrocket

The Dept. of Safety is so flooded with new applicants that they're telling current holders renewing their carry permit that it may take months, not weeks, to get their new permit in the mail.

Perhaps people have heard that one of the presidential candidates has said that he favors a federal ban on concealed carry.

Good point.

Concealed carry: it's for the little people.

That course, along with fingerprinting, a thorough background check and $115, gives Tennessee residents the right to carry a loaded firearm in the Volunteer State

Wrong.
Citizens of TN already have the right.
Those are just the hoops they have to jump through for the government to recognize that right.

Hey, that's where I took my class! Mark Haskins is a good guy, and the cost of the class was minimal. I'm one of those Hamilton County residents strolling around with a pistol on my hip. In fact, I'm sitting in a room with two folks who have no idea. I suspect that one of them would **** a brick if he knew. :)

I hope to soon be one of the applications clogging up the system!

Hope you have lots of patience. Took 97 days from the day I applied to the day I finally got good news in the mailbox.

shdwfx,
What do you mean by 'tn citizens already have the right. Those are just hoops they have to jump through' ???

I am going to apply for my handgun permit. I don't know of any good classes in the area. How hard is it to obtain a permit; I guess what I'm asking is how picky they when deciding.

ohhh OK, gotcha

It is a good thing that more and more people want to carry legally, but this sort of comment just irritates me.

Start with arrogance, stir in a little control freak, sprinkle some foolishness on top, and you get this:

“We feel, at the very least, local law enforcement should have the discretion in deciding who gets a concealed weapons permit,” said Brian Malte

Sure, you and Lee Paige should decide who has the right to BEAR arms in self defense.

blonde rider,
Tennessee is a Shall Issue State. If you are of age and meet the non felon and mental requirements, picky does not apply.
You will be issued a permit.

blonde_rider,

what I think shdwfx means is that the right to defend oneself is a natural right, which all law-abiding citizens have. I tend to agree.

However, most governments are unwilling to recognize that right at all, and some, like that of Tennessee, place a fee and checks on the exercise of that right. Only a very few places, like Vermont, require no license to carry concealed. Open carry is a bit more widely legal.

Welcome to The High Road.

I don't live in Tennessee, but I love Memphis BBQ and listening to Kenny Chesney.

That being said, WAY TO GO TENNESSEE! I love hearing about more and more people getting their permits, buying guns, training, and taking their 2nd amendment rights serious.

This tells me something else, these are not just gun owners, they are strong gun owners. Why do I say that? Because these people take the time to buy a gun, go to a class, pay money, submit to fingerprints and a background check, and then possibly carry their weapon with them. These are on type of dedicated gun owners and we need lots and lots of them.

Texas numbers???

“In Texas, we challenged their laws, and legislators produced one example of a permit holder stopping a crime, but we found that 5,314 people there were involved in committing crimes after receiving their permit.”

I'd REALLY like to see a source for those numbers. I personally know of three instances of defensive use of a handgun by Texans to stop crimes. Notice they don't actually claim that the legislator COULD ONLY produce one example of a permit holder stopping a crime.

The fundamental dishonesty of this kind of speaking is revolting.

Also, I wonder if they included speeding and parking violations in the count of CHL holders "commiting crimes". They sure weren't gun crimes. :barf:

Others say concealed weapons laws are flawed and rely on a mythical belief that people who carry a loaded gun will use it for a good reason at the right time.
Let's rephrase that:

"Others say gun control laws are flawed and rely on a mythical belief that law-abiding people who legally carry a loaded gun will use it for a bad reason at the wrong time."

and how many of those were just traffic citations?

I been waiting on a renewal since Febuary...I called them and they sent me an "extension" paper that is good until August 8, 2008...

The lady just laughed and said "We're absolutely covered up in applications..."

Hey, I lived there for 13 years and you couldn't get any kind of CCL. Heck, even when I wanted to buy a handgun, I had to crawl to the local sheriff for approval.

The course is ridiculously simple. Lasts one day, and you'll get a short written test before hitting the range to burn 50 rounds. I think the longest distance we shot at was maybe 15 yards. After that, you go to the local DOS location, turn in you app and $$$, get fingerprinted, and then spend the next couple months charging the mailman six days a week.

Where in TN are you? I can tell you locations for te course in and around Chatt if that's where you are... if not, there are probably others here who can help.

Also, you might be interested in dropping in over at www.tngunowners.com Nice local flavor.
