Texas?

I noticed most of the suggestions were for south of Denton. Nothing wrong with that. Puts you between Denton and Big-D and may be convenient. You might, however, consider Sanger, just north of Denton. Smaller town, good school. I don't live there, never lived there, but I know some folks who do and my son once did live there. They are quite content with the small town atmosphere and the proximity to the larger cities in a short drive. Welcome to Texas!

Lots of good suggestions. I lived in the DFW area twice and went through Denton quite often usually on fishing trips.

You will do better living on the outskirts of the Metro plex area and you definitely do not want to live in Dallas. Too much traffic and the Ft. Worth area is definitely much more friendly than Dallas. However the traffic is getting pretty awful in Ft. Worth also.

There may be something in the water for this area because the women tend to be real lookers.

I'm based out of Lewisville, which looks like a great place to live. (I'm a full-time RVer). Denton itself is also a great town, but you might want to check out Lake Dallas and Hickory Creek, between Denton and Lewisville.

I echo other members' thoughts -- Not one but TWO Cheaper Than Dirts within driving distance, huge Cabelas and Bass Pro with a really great indoor range.

C'mon down and enjoy! ;)

I think the North Dallas Tollway is being extended north and a decision was made to put it right on the county line between Denton and Collin counties. So there should be a lot of future growth and development along the tollway - maybe much like Frisco.

Is that good or bad for you??? I can't say but you might want to check it out, discuss with realtor or something. Maybe future home resale will be higher; or, maybe you would prefer to be farther away from where greater growth might be. I prefer to have access to a major toll road or freeway to have quicker access to Dallas, Arlington (Rangers and C'boys) the Tx Motor speedway, horse racing, etc. You also haver I-35 if you want to go north into Oklahoma for some gambling.

I have no knowledge of Denton schools.

Best of Luck and Welcome. Hope you like barbeque and guns!

As other have mentioned, many options in this area, depending upon your interests. It sounds like your office is maybe about 10 miles northeast of our little private indoor gun range. details at www.dentoncountysports.com. It is located just between Lantana ("county devlopment district" with a population now pushing 7,000) and the little Town of Copper Canyon (population less than 2,000, predominately "ranchettes").

FWIW, the State has recently completed constuction on FM 2499, connecting Denton to DFW airport - and making the commute to/from cities like Flower Mound a little less onerous than 35E.

The lady who does fingerprinting for my CHL classes lives in and loves Argyle. And her husband is a local realtor, so PM if ya need. Another lady member has house with 6 acres for sale just north of us. It, like many in the area though, is geared toward more of a "horse person" than "gun person".

Well it looks like you've gotten quite a bit of good information on the Denton area. Nothing for me to add besides Welcome to Texas.

Before I forget ... another of our members relocated a few years back from Boston. And settled on a house in Highland Village, recently split by the FM2499 extension mentioned above. Highland Village used to be a small cozy community on the south edge of Lake Lewsiville, but a year or three ago got the dubious distinction of acquiring the largest Super Walmart in the country (on FM 407). Said member also has FFL (www.northtexasarms.com).

Both Highland Village and Flower Mound have been ranked as some of the safest cities in Texas. As far as public schools go, also well above average.

Probably nothing like New Jersey, but you won't be here long until you will become intimately acquainted with Denton County Cental Appraisal District, the tax collecting entity for the county, cities, and school districts. :uhoh:

BTW, welcome to Tejas!

Everyone here is pointing you to cities. You should be able to find a place in the country, and have a short commute. Anyway, lots of good places to live up there. And yes, 99% of the land in Texas is privately owned. You will have to work at finding a hunting lease if your talking deer.

I live in Denton and have lived here or in the area for the majority of my life. Denton's a nice town and on the far northern edge of the Dallas/Ft. Worth MetroMess. From Denton South it is nothing but built up city for almost 70 continuous miles. North and West you can be out in the country in 5 minutes.
Denton has somewhat over 100,000 residents and has most of the stores, restaurants you'll find just about everywhere. As mentioned earlier, it's a college town with the University of North Texas (over 20,000 enrollment) and Texas Woman's University (about 10,000 enrollment).

There's not much in the way of violent crime and what there is of crime is the usual property crimes that you will find in a city of this size. I can't tell you much about the public schools as I don't have any children and don't pay much attention to them. I don't think they are bad though. Denton does not have a local gun store anymore. We had a great one in T & Son's but it closed about 6 years ago leaving us only with Walmart. But Cabela's is only about 30 minutes away and the two Cheaper Than Dirts aren't much farther away than that.

The commute up and down I-35E from Dallas is horrendous. I-35E is only four lanes (two north, two south) wide through Denton and it is often already bumper to bumper at 6:30 in the morning. I-35W to Fort Worth is somewhat better, but gets very bad once you approach Ft. Worth. Highway 380 east towards McKinney and Frisco isn't bad most of the time. A commute from Frisco wouldn't be bad and neither would one from Argyle. Argyle is a small town southwest of Denton (about 8 miles) and is the prettiest country in the area. Sanger would be an easy commute from the North as well. I wouldn't want to make the drive from McKinney though, it's just a little too far through too much traffic when there's other places as good or better closer.

There's not much in the way of gun ranges close by either. Several have closed in recent years because of urban sprawl. People move next to an existing shooting range and then hire lawyers to force them to close. Quail Creek is about 15 miles southwest down I-35W towards Fort Worth and is blahhh... They don't allow you to shoot FMJ rifle ammo and you MUST shoot from the shooting bench. You can't practice shooting your rifle offhand or from any other position. Both rifle and pistol ranges are slow fire, something like two seconds between shots and the nearest pistol target is 20 yards IIRC. They don't allow you to shoot buckshot from a shotgun either.

Magnum in Sanger is much better in allowing FMJ rifle ammo but it is quite small and the operating hours are limited and often very variable depending on the whim of the owners. There is a private gun club in Denton, the North Texas Shooter's Association but the waiting list is quite long and you need to know a member(s) to recommend you to get on the list. But they do have nice facilities if you become a member and it very convenient just north of town.

There's a very active music scene in Denton if you're in to that with quite an eclectic selection of music styles, from old style country to rock to tejano, to nuclear polka and jazz. Also Denton is in the process of getting a large shopping area/mall on the northwest side of town (Rayzor Ranch) that's suppose to bring a lot of new stores to town.

Hope you find this useful...

y'all are forgeting the mos important thing. DR. Pepper in Denton is made using real cane sugar.

After you get settled in...

and are looking for a place to shoot, the Haltom City Rifle & Pistol club is located between Hurst and Fort Worth on 121. It is a private club but it is pretty cheap to join. Safest range I have ever shot at. I have been a member for almost 20 years. They have a short range pistol range, a range up to 50 yards, a range 100 yards, and a 200 yard range. No shotgun ranges. There are matches every Saturday. Go to their web site and check them out.....chris3

Even though I was born in the Chicago to UK citizens and have lived in Princeton NJ, Philadelphia PA, State College PA, and Scottsdale AZ, I've lived in the Dallas area a good part of my life, since 1994 actually. I've lived in the suburbs of Frisco, Plano, Addison, and I currently live in the Lakewood area of East Dallas. I always keep coming back to DFW, I love it.

If you're not averse to commuting just a little, Frisco and Plano are far enough north of Dallas to be reasonably close to Denton and have decent schools and community. The only problem in my opinion, is that they are somewhat economic and social bubbles. Because that part of the metroplex is so sprawled out, be prepared to drive... a lot. It's a lot like Phoenix that way, and it's the one of the only things I don't like about DFW.

Edit: Grammar & Spelling

Are you married?

Do you like gorgeous Texas college girls?

Do you like music?

Do you like auto racing: Indycar, NASCAR, Sprint Car?

Do you like to legally carry a concealed gun in your car?

Do you like to pack heat while you drive a gorgeous, Texas college girl to the Indycar races at night at Texas Motor Speedway?

No, you say?

DON'T COME TO TEXAS:D

y'all are forgeting the mos important thing. DR. Pepper in Denton is made using real cane sugar.

It's a little bottling company in Dublin, Texas that still uses real sugar in their Dr. Pepper. Here in Denton we get the regular stuff everybody else in the whole country gets. Dublin is over a hundred miles southwest of Denton near Stephenville.

DOC!!!! You forgot barbeque!!!

Unfortunately, most of the barbecue in the metromess is pretty mediocre. In Denton there's a little place that just opened last year, "From Tha Heart BBQ" that is pretty decent. It's more of a takeout kinda 'que place. There's a Rudy's BBQ out on I-35E that is ok enough for a 'cue fix but not really special.
For really excellent barbecue, you have to go down to Central Texas and visit the bbq joints in the small towns around Austin. Kreuz and Smitty's in Lockhart, Cooper's in Llano, (the Cooper's in the Ft. Worth Stockyards is not even close to the original) City Market in Luling are just a few of the best in Texas and all are close to Austin. Houston's bbq joints are mediocre as well, it must be a big city thing.

I think the people recommending driving from Plano or Mckinney are damn crazy. Do you realize how many red lights there are on that stretch of 380? Commuting from Dallas would take hours back and forth. Cowtown would not be bad but you would have to live north of the loop. Wait till you see I-35E. You will not believe how stupid the person who planned that disaster was. On some entrance ramps you have about 30 ft to merge.

Somebody already mentioned going a little further north toward Sanger and that would be a great idea in my opinion. Traffic is a MAJOR problem in the metroplex. Our motto is build, build, build and then try to make bigger highways. I may have more of an aversion to traffic than most people but that may be because I am a route driver and I go all over north Texas and I could get done so much faster if people would just get out of my way. Damn just thinking about the jacked up highways pisses me off.

Welcome to Texas, please God don't drive slow.

Which Cabelas are you referring to?

The one on I-35 just north of Ft. Worth. From Denton, just take I-35W towards Ft. Worth -- it's east of 35 about 10 mi north of I-820 (which will take you to the original Cheaper Than Dirt).

"Very strange, my company is currently relocating to that same area, more specifically, Hickory Creek, TX."

So, I guess you've already read about the rattlesnakes native to that area, right?

.....

:D

We live in Highland Village, which is just across the lake from Denton, more specifically Corinth, Lake Dallas, and Hickory Creek. As the other guys have said, it all depends on your interests. I personally don't enjoy Denton much, but we often go to Dallas or Ft. Worth on the weekends for events. We're 30 minutes away from DFW airport, which has direct flights to most any place in the U.S. and Europe worth visiting.

We didn't raise kids in this area, but my wife keeps up with the neighbors' kids. About half are in public schools and half in private schools. They go to Lewisville school district schools. They seem to go to good colleges; the girl across the street started Harvard last fall.

The Dallas Gun Club is about 10 miles down I 35 from where we live. It's mainly shotguns, but does have a nice rifle/pistol range. As Garybeard mentioned earlier, the Denton County Sports Association is a great place to take CHL courses and maintain profiency on their handgun range. Memberships are very reasonable.

I'll be happy to try to answer any specific questions you may have -- and take you out to bust a few clays when you get settled.

If you do anything questionable in the legal sense, I would stay away from Flower Mound. Their Police Officers are generally very... shall we say, strict. I've been ticketed and have had many friends arrested for really stupid reasons. For instance, being at the park too late at night...
