Hey, I may (very very high, but not 100% chance) be moving to the greater Killeen, TX area!
Oh MAN, I cannot wait to get there- esp since it means leaving MD!

So... please help a guy out:

Tell me everything i need to know about the place!

Best places to live?
Best gunshops?
Best gunsmiths?
Nearest shooting ranges?
Nice communities?
Homes for sale with some land attached?
etc etc etc...
All the good stuff!

I am SO pumped about the possibility of getting back to TX that i get a big dopey grin just thinking about it!

Well, can't say I know too much about the Killeen area, but I do have some things in common. I just left MD. in November, and have moved to Texas. Best thing I ever did......only wish I had done it ten years ago. :) Come on down, the waters fine and the beers cold.

I live in Temple. Last year I worked in Killeen and this year I was transferred to Temple. It's about a 30 minute drive. I'd say the nicest places to live are in Belton or Salado. Both smaller towns with pretty good school systems and some nice areas. Both are kind of between Temple and Killeen. Belton is closer to Temple and Salado is a bit farther away. If I could choose between Temple/Belton or Killeen/Harker Heights/Copperas Cove I would definitely live in Temple/Belton. There is a lot more crime in Killeen and there are a lot of gangsta types. The middle school that I was working at in Killeen used to have a severe gang problem...that was just the middle school.

There aren't any really great gunshops around to be honest but I guess it's passable. In Temple you have Weber's, Love's Guns, Academy Sports and Outdoors and the pawn shops. Weber's has a pretty good selection and I know a guy there who's a nice guy but they tend to be overpriced and they do not haggle (period) on gun prices (at least not on new guns...never tried with used). Love's is good people and they are nice but they are small and selection is limited. However, that's your place for any transfers if you order from somewhere...they only charge 15 bucks. Academy is overpriced with slim selection but a good place to buy supplies. I've never had need of a gunsmith here but Weber's does that.

Killeen has limited shops as well but they have a couple of well-stocked places. One is Action Pawn on Ft. Hood Street right at 190. It's a fully-stocked gun store. They have a lot of guns, especially AR-15 style rifles and lots of pistols too. They are overpriced as far as the price tags but I assume they must haggle...never bought a gun from them but have bought holsters. They have the full Bianchi line with some Uncle Mike's and other stuff mixed in. Lots of ammo but that's kind of high too. It's a fun place to look. They must buy a lot of guns off the soldiers from Ft. Hood. If you drive south for a few miles on Ft. Hood St. then you'll see Guns Galore on the left. They have a large selection of pistols and rifles. I don't usually go there though because last time I was in there, although I had a good experience with a really nice young sales guy, the owner was kind of a loud mouth guy and was making racist comments. That kind of turned me off of Guns Galore.

As far as Shooting Ranges go I feel like it's kind of limited here but there are a few places. See this thread:

It fully covers that subject. One that wasn't mentioned there is an indoor range in Cameron called Aaron's Guns or something like that. 25 yds 10 dollars per hour. Haven't been there but I might visit soon.

There are plenty of communities in the outlying areas of the towns. Those are usually the nicest ones. I can't really help you there though. I've only lived here for about a year and a half and I live in an apartment.

There's not much to do in Temple or Killeen really. Austin is an hour or so up the road and Waco is 40 minutes or less from Temple so those are always options if you don't mind driving.

This really is a fairly nice, conservative place to live but I can't wait to get out. I like to have more options in restaurants, shopping and activities and I'm kinda looking forward to moving this summer (my wife is starting residency). We think we're going to be placed in Waco but we aren't sure.

Good luck in your move and welcome to Texas! It's a great place and I wouldn't want to live in any other state! Call me a snob if you want but it's true.

Best places to live Copperas Cove about 8 miles West of Killeen on 190.
There's some really nice homes in Harker Heights on the East side of Killeen as well.

Best gun shop used to be Brocks in Copperas Cove. That's on the main drag through town.

Don't know about ranges, but Brock can tell you where.

Bienvenidos aTejas, mi amigo.

Background: I was assigned to Fort Hood for about a year from 2000-2001.

Bottom line is, and I don't mean to offend anybody, Killeen is a total freakin' dump. Ugly to look at and high crime. And I'm not a food or culture snob, but it ain't got either one of those, either... just 1 modern movie theater and some chain restaurants. I heard somebody joke that Killeen has all the Southern charm of New York City, and all the high culture of a fire ant colony.

There ARE some nice areas within driving distance, however. And cost of living is low. Pistolsmith Allan Tillman is in Austin, and Bob Londrigan (Brazos Custom) is in the same area code.

I have a good buddy from Copperas Cove, and we went to all of the pawn shops in the Killeen area in one day. There are 26 of them I think. Most are gun shops where you can pawn stuff :). The best gun deals usually come from GIs shipping out. Watch the newspaper.

Just my .02,

ANd the good news is Killeen/Temple/Belton area is close to Waco.

Waco has a couple of decent ranges and the Skeet Trap range is first rate.
Some OK gun stores. SMiths are hard to come by. Waco is a great place for Mexican food or most of the chains, just don't try to find a good steak unless you think Outback is good.

Don't eat at the Luby's in Killeen unless you have your CHL. (thats where it all started for TX)

My impression driving through Cove has always been that it's a real craphole. I haven't spent adequate time there though...that's just the general impression that it gives off. Killeen is kind of a craphole too, that's why that whole Killeen/Cove/Harker Heights area would be my last choice of places to live in Bell/Coryell Counties.

Smoke is right about food and culture. Although Temple College in Temple does have a good jazz band and decent symphony and every year they have a really good jazz fest considering the size of the town with international players that come in and perform. There are also a couple of decent new restaurants in downtown Temple - Cheeves Bros. and Pignetti's. Restaurant selection is very limited though in general. Temple is more limited than Killeen. It's getting a bit better but still pretty bad. As I said, I'll be glad to move on.

thanks

Thanks for all the warm welcomes!
Interesting about some of the replies how similar our situations are: I am being assigned to Ft. Hood (Leatherneck, that's is why i am using Killeen as the hub of my search), and I will have just finished a residency program.
Small world!
Right, i was advised not to live in Killeen for all the reasons specified.
I hear traffic is mostly nonexistent so driving a little bit is no problem.

SeanSmith, you mentione dthat there ARE some nicer places within driving distance: any recommendations?

Any of you a real estate agent? If so please send a listing of homes for sale or anticipated for sale in the June-July time period.

Smoke, I plan to make a trip to Waco almost as soon as i get there. See for years i have owned an American Derringer that needs a small repair. It was still under warrantee when it broke, but I would have had to have the guy now holding it for me ship it to them and return it, ffl hassles, etc. And they couldn't ship it back to me because it is not on the MSP approved handgun roster. So I am just heading up there soon as I settle in.

I lived in El Paso for a year and am pretty jazzed about heading back to Texas.

Basically out on the outskirts of the area. Can't really give you directions off the top of my head, but a friend of mine has a NICE house in a nice neighborhood outside of Harker Heights up in the hills. Weirdly enough, there was a pretty good sushi place in the area... I think in Copperas Cove, of all places. There is a pretty good Chinese restaurant in Killeen, but it is basically a front for the Chinese KGB. ;)

Fort Hood had a free pistol & rifle range, I think you just needed an ID card to shoot there.

One thing to beware of with shooting on post-all firearms brought onto any Army (and probably any DoD) installation must be registered with the installation Provost Marshall's office. This is usually, but not always, done at the same place you register your vehicle for your post stickers.

At every post I've been stationed at (Germany, Benning, Lewis, and Jackson) if you live in on-post housing, your guns have to be both registered and stored in your unit arms room. Which is why I chose to live off post.
