The $5,000 question

$5,000 is a lot of cash to put into something that is going to be confiscated if/when such laws are passed.

What kind of guns did the folks in the UK and Australia invest in prior to their gun control?

It's naive to think they're just after our children's future guns.

If you do double up, you'll either make money or have a spare - either way, you can't lose.

I agree with those predicting that stripped lowers will be difficult to build up to functioning firearms under AWB II. I wouldn't chance it.

Stipulating "grandfathering" and omitting issues of profit: I'd buy one or two using guns. Some variant on the AK, maybe, and/or a 20" AR15.

I'm not sure of the real point of gazillions of very-high-capacity magazines. The AK standard is 30, isn't it? 20 for the AR. At most, maybe a half-dozen or so for either rifle.

Then I'd spend the rest of the $5,000 on reloading gear and components, after picking up a thousand rounds or so of loaded ammo.

I figure that one or two firearms should last a good while before they finally die, but mags will probably wear out and need replacement parts faster - better to be "too safe" than to say "oh man, I wish I'd bought a few more of these" down the road.

I also figure they'll be good profit fodder. There never seems to be such a thing as "too many mags."
If they're banned from being transferred to others, well... I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

try 44mag.com. they have ar15mags for less than 10 bucks right now and ss for less than 13 bucks. if you buy more than 100 dollars worth the shipping is free. they also have any other mag you might want to buy. RG

I have a year so that is abit of time....

Research of AWB II: $0
Gas to drive to DC: $50
Appointments with critical house members that will meet with me: $0
Donations to campaigns of 5 most critical congress critiers to do the right thing: $4950

I would go the AK route, get maybe ten good Saiga's in the $300 range ($279.38 @ http://www.rrarms.com/catalog.php?prod=GIZ132) and spend the rest on mags and 7.62x39 ammo! I love AR's but I feel that going that route would give me the biggest bang for my buck!

They have their .223 Saiga's for about the same if you wanted to go that way ($273.67).

I'm with Conqueror to a degree. I'd buy a few complete rifles and mags to go with them:
SA M1A Scout
Anvil Arms AR-15 M4
AK-47 (pick your variant, but I'd go cheap and reliable)
Quality High Cap Pistol

Then I'd buy stripped or complete lowers, uppers and parts kits for AR-15 - perhaps a gas piston upper on the credit card and a truck load of ammo. A mag fed bolt action .50BMG upper would be a nice addition as well.

I'll be honest here guys, this one's tricky. In my current situation, I'm really trying to come up with $500(not $5000), and I'm not exactly sure what 1 firearm to get.
So the very idea that I'd have $5k to work with is hard enough to grasp. When I give it a shot(as I have several times since this thread popped up), my fiancee usually hears the sound of my head exploding as it fails to hold in the possibilities.

Best I've come up with is AR-15 with goodies(grips, optics, you know the drill), about $2k total. Then $500 worth of mags and $2.5k worth of ammo. Including the fun stuff like tracers, AP, incendiary, etc.

So yeah. Wherever you're finding these money trees, let me know. :p

I'd like an M-14, which I don't have. I would also like something chambered for 7.62 X 39, which I don't have. I would need to buy ammo for it. I have .308 ammo, but could use more. I'm pretty set otherwise.
