Greetings to all,

as some of you know i have been wanting to get two seperate AR-15 rifles (two different configs) for over a year now and have no been able to do so due to family monetary situation (trans. the money goes to pay important bills before fun stuff).

well a comment in another thread got me to thinking about how i wanted to proceed with the purchase of the first AR, when the time comes. i figure that, with good luck i'll be in the market adn ready to buy sometime around the July to August time frame.. and that of course puts the AWB sunset "right around the corner" so to speak from my first purchase of a rifle that falls under that legislation....

the comment that was made was that a person who did not yet own an AR lower receiver or complete rlfle, that wanted a "Pre-ban" configuration should buy a pre-ban upper prior to the sunset then buy the lower AFTER the ban dies...
in a way this has some appeal, but then again what if you buy that upper then somehow the ban is extended/made permanent/replaced by a stronger one?? then you;d have to either sell that upper or get it "neutered" before you could buy a lower, or a complete AR of another configuration!

i wondered what the concensus would be on the subject, should i just suck it up and buy a post-ban config rifle if i get the cash prior to sunset?
buy the upper that I (or my Wife in the case of the other upper) REALLY want, wait/pray for the sunset, then get the lower afterwards?
Buy a lower then wait for Sept 14th to order/bring an upper home?
some other option i'm not completely aware of...??

what'll it be guys, my mind is spinning.

thanks

I would buy a post-ban upper due to the fact that we don't know if Congres will extend the AWB or not. Plus a few states on working on thier own AWB.

Pre-ban uppers are usualy pretty good deals, and if the AWB is renewed then you can usualy just chop off the bayonette lug (2 seconds with a Dremel) and spot weld the flash suppressor and you're all nice and legal.

However, since you don't own any AR right now, I'd consider just buying a nice post-ban configured rifle just in case they go and replace the AWB with something even stricter.

Honestly, on my 16" RRA I can't imagine any preban features that could be added to the upper that would make the rifle any better (a CAR stock might be nice though).

Now if you really want to stay ahead of the game, go get yourself a bunch of 20 and 30 round mags just in case they replace the AWB with a stricter one that effects magazines.

You could always sell your preban upper to someone with a preban lower if the ban DOESNT sunset. They retain value pretty well.

Buy a stripped lower receiver---and then build it piecemeal over the summer-----by when September comes----you'll know which upper to buy.

Building your lower lets you get exactly which parts you want---and you don't have to come up with the cash all at once.

I'm assuming you don't care about a bayo lug. The question comes down to: What do you want on the muzzle?

If you want a brake or a plain crowned muzzle, then it's easy: Buy a post-ban rifle now in the configuration you want. When the ban sunsets, install a telestock. It takes about 15 minutes of work if you don't know what you're doing, and about $60.

If you want a threaded muzzle post-sunset, you could get a plain crowned muzzle'd and then just have it turned and threaded - shouldn't be more than $100 - when the sunset happens.

ok, for the sake of clarifying what i am "wanting" in an AR...

there are three configs i WILL build (unless something stupid like a total ban happens, not likely that..) adn a fourth that i MAY want later

the "maybe" is the easiest since i don't really care whats ont eh end of it's barrel... a NM style AR that can be used in NRA High Power "Service Rifle" competition. don't care one way or the other if it has a plain target crowned muzzle or like some of the pre-ban builds i've seen an A2 birdcage on the end to help protect a target crown.

this would be at LEAST the third item down the "ARs to build/buy" list, if i deceided to get it at all.

the others i would preferr to have in "non-nuetered" form...

Wife wants as close to a M-16A1 as is legally possible (meaing a thin profile barrel on a C7 upper, it looks like), so she wants one with the bayo lug and flash suppressor, three-prong, early birdcage don't matter much, though i kinda like the idea of the 3-prong :)

I want a "fun gun" that is built to A2 standards and would preferr the lug and birdcage to be real.

and lastly and just for the sheer heck of it a copy of one of those "frankenstein carbines" that you see AirForce Combat controllers and Pararescue guys runnign around with. looks like a XM-177 and an M-4 got left a little too long int eh closet together.... :D
in other words A1 sights, possibly even slick side upper, and an M4gery style 16inch barrel, etc. again i'd like this project to be "as UN-neutered as possible"

that help clarify where i'm coming from

Have you guys read the new AWB the libs are coming up with? The ones I have seen my wonderful PRK senators come up with would be even more strict than the PRKs. NO EVIL FEATURES, PERIOD! The one I saw outlaws M1 Carbines and a host of other military arms. If this thing goes through, everyone is royally screwed. I don't think you can just shave your bayo lug off and tack on the flash suppressor. I could be wrong.

I recommend just getting a post ban lower now. They are ultra cheap, you don't even have to get the parts kit or the buttstock. Then if the ban comes back, depending on how long you have, use the credit card and put that puppy together lickity split and take her on down and sign her over to the feds (aka register).

I can't say how important it is to get a hold of your senators right now. Even for me a PRK member.
