The .50 Cal threat...

it is a fact, that every barret rifle owner defies the laws of physics and human limitations and shoots down planes every day. when that gets boring, we walk over to the nearest army base and blow up a few tanks with our super leet .50 caliber bullets that even the guys from star trek would fear.

now i wouldn't be surprised if some liberal trash newspaper prints the above as factual information.

I've never tried shooting anything at those ranges but from what I understand, it probably takes years of training and experience.

There will never be a .50 cal ban nation wide because Barret will stop selling them to government agencies and the the military loves their M-82 (I think thats the right designator). Barret is one of the few companies that truely values the 2nd Amendment over $. I think with the gun lobby and the pentagon opposed to it, any ban would die a quick death.

Now how is it legislation in the US controlling a firearm made in the US can be used to control shooting at the border where the projectile flies from the south to the north. I think she made two serious mistakes. One, linking .50 BMG and "sniper rifle" as synonymous and two, trying to get it classified as a machinegun rather than a centerfire target rifle as it actually is. She is implying that sniper rifles cause mass death and destruction and should be made harder to obtain. This is flawed thinking because they are no different than any other centerfire rifle with the exception of the fact that they have a longer range due to increased velocity. Yes they can penetrate a steel target but that is simply due to the bullet weight and velocity of that particular load. A semi-truck can go through a car, should we start classifying those as destructive devices or make it harder for truck drivers to obtain one? NO! Because that would be completely absurd!!!

LAR-15, the caliber cutoff is anything over .50; .50 is legal but .51 would be NFA restricted unless exempted for "sporting purposes," as 12-gauge (.729 caliber) shotguns are.

IIRC, Feinstein is wrong when she says the Coast Guard uses .50 BMG long range rifles to take out boat engines. The coasties have .50 BMG MACHINEGUNS mounted on many of their vessels, and I believe they may also use a few AR's with .50 Beowulf uppers, but not .50 BMG rifles.

Mexico has a ban on military caliber firearms--.308, .223, 9mm,
.45ACP, .50BMG,etc.--which is what made the .38 Super popular
in Mexico: not a military round.

So, since gun bans are SO successful, there cannot be any
military caliber sniper rifles in Mexico to be used against US Border
Patrol.

We need to crack down on bad acts by bad people,
not scapegoat things and thereby criminalize lawabiding
owners of those things. The Feinstein-Brady approach
is wasted effort.

What will she come up with next?

She strikes me as being the type that spends all her working hours scouring the news reports, political situations, gun manufacturers websites, and maybe even forums like this one, looking for opportunities to turn a 'nothing' into a 'something' and thus stick another feather in her cap no matter how it turns out.

For example, by raising a concern over .50's being used to kill border patrol agents from across the border at long range, she can use this to either chalk up another victory for gun control, or just make herself look like she's right, or both.

If she's able to push this far enough and end up getting the manufacture of .50's prohibited in this country, she claims a victory for gun control.

If, on the other hand, it doesn't work and nothing is done, and then a border patrol agent is shot at from across the border with a .50 (a fatality isn't even necesssary, just being shot at will do) by the Mexican military, drug smugglers, or anyone else, then she can say "See, I told you so."

In her mind, she can't lose either way.

She may be misguided and just plain ignorant, but she's also a shrewd, conniving little would-be dictator.
