I recall seeing a Smith and Wesson 586 with a 2.5" barrell in a gunstore about 15 years ago, and it was a beautiful gun which I have harbored a desire for ever since. Unfortunately, at the time, I was a poor student, and I walked away from it. Now, things are better financially, and I'm interested in finding one again. Now, I'm being picky, but I wan't one of the old fashioned 6 shots, not one of the new 7 shot revolvers, like the Performance Center L-Comp. Problem is that I simply cannot find one. GunBroaker, GunsAmerica, no luck. So, the question is, was the gun I saw back then a specialty or custom made gun? Am I stuck looking for an inexpensive 4" 586 that I can have cut down and round-butted?

Any info is appreciated.

Around 1993, Smith & Wesson made a limited number of 6-shot / model 586 revolvers in .357 Magnum with 2 1/2" barrels and R.B. wood fingergrooved stocks. The Product Code was 103500. Also the same gun with rubber stocks and chambered in .38 Special was produced for export. They are out there, but not easy to find. I wish you luck.

...I imagine having seen one "in person" so to speak would make the allure that much more irresistible. I have only seen them in photos...and still the the "desire" is strong ! Very handsome revolvers.........as are all the 581/586 series.

There was one up for sale on Gunbroker last weekend. The seller was IBSandy. He posts over on the S&W forum too. Maybe you can contact him and see if he still has it. It had no bids meeting the reserve, last time I saw it. TJ

Also, the S&W Performance Center has out a 3-inch 586 that they call the "586 L-Comp" It has a ported barrel.
