Smith and Wesson recalled the models 581, 586, 681, 686, or 581-1,
586-1, 681-1, 686-1 and 686CS-1 . Extremely high pressure magnum loads were resulting in cylinder binding on some guns. They were afraid it would cause failure to fires in the wrong situations, and also that people would have accidental discharges by improperly trying to release the cylinder. Those models, if they've been returned to S&W for the recall fix , should have an M (for 'modified') over the model number.

If anyone has those models still unmodified, S&W will still pay the shipping costs and replace the offending parts for free.

Got a very good deal on this 686P 4 inch no lock, firing pin on the hammer. I took about 30 minutes to really clean it then I took some mothers mag polish to it. The picture does it no justice you can see your reflection in it and the best about it all, it shoots better than it looks. Hopefully this is good enough to be a part of the club :)

I should have wiped it down before taking the picture. There are no blimishes or scratches just the lint from being in the box. This one I keep in the box in the safe :)

Just a few more to go with my 686 posted earlier. So if my 686 did not secure my membership as part of the club maybe these will. One day I will stop being lazy and take a combined picture of everything. :) This is not all of them just to lazy to crack the safe.

I have had the 686 platform on my mind for a long time now. I keep hoping the performance center will come out with a great on in 5' or 6' barrel 7 shot, and a barrel that isn't all cut funny.

I've debated just getting the 627 and ahving the barrel replaced etc, or getting a 686 and having a good triggerman polish her up.

I am leaning more toward the latter, and the two 686's I am thinking about are the limited edition 5inch barrel unfluted cylinder as we as the 3 inch. I have come to the conclusion that I will be most happy with TWO 686s, one in a 5-6inch length, the other in a 3inch length.

My questions are, are the supply of 5"ers gonig to dry up pretty fast? Is the 5" going to have to live in a 6" holster? is the 3" gonig to be around for a while?

Brought home my first 686 this afternoon. It is a 686-2 with adjustable front and rear sites and shows very little use. Now if I can just find an IWB holster for it. :D

Ghost Walker...

What a fine 686 you have there. Tell me, is it a 7 shot and what kind of grips/holster is it? Thanks a lot, and have fun shooting her ;).

I'm thinking of perhaps picking up a 686 for CCW/HD purposes and had a few questions that i was hoping some of you could answer.

Does having a 3 inch barrel instead of a 4 inch make a significant difference in the way it carries?
Does anyone have any chronographs or know where i can find some for a 3 inch barrel?
What type of holster would work for IWB purposes?

Thanks in advance.

I'm a S&W fan and this is my second-favorite Smith: DSC08342.JPG
It's a 686-3 without lock.

My favorite is my Mod. 625 cal. .45 acp, but this is a Mod. 686 thread:uhoh:

I just picked up my 586....very very nice gun. I will gets by the weekend, but for now I was hoping someone could help me with the year. The only serial/model markings are inside the cylinder area. It is marked "AAE9287 Mod 586". The Yoke is marked "E7 38493". So, what year? Anything else I need to know about this baby?

Can I play too? The 686 has to be my favorite S&W revolver especially with the 6" barrel. Add Ahrends grips and it is really hard to beat. Mine also has the Burris Fastfire Holographic Sight making it much more user friendly to these 61 year old eyes.

That looks good. I also have a 6" model that I pretty much just use for target work at 25 and 50 yards, but I must admit I have never warmed up to it as much as the shorter barreled ones I own. I should probably look at putting optics on it I guess as my eyesight is nowhere near what it used to be. I assume that is a square butt unit? I like those grips as well, be a good change from the goodyears I have on mine.

What type of optics mount is that? Does it mount using the existing rear sight holes and such, or does the gun need to be drilled?

Thanks
Wayne

Hi Wayne.... yes, this is the square butt version. The grips are the Ahrends finger grooves. They extend no more than 1/4" below the bottom of the frame and to me are extremely comfortable.

The optics are a Burris Fastfire Holographic Sight. It is a 4 MOA red dot... retails for around $275 to $300 but can be found online for $175 to $200. Glass lens and aluminum housing. Supposed to resist up to 1000 g's. I've seen them slide mounted on a 1911... a lot more abuse than they would ever get setting atop a revolver. The mount I am using is from Weigand. It is made for the newer S&W's that come factory drilled for scope mounts. My 686 is from the early 80's though.... haven't actually drilled any holes yet though. The mount is currently glued on using MicroBed as I wanted to make sure that I would actually like these optics before modifying the 686 in any permanent manner. Weaver makes a "no gunsmithing" mount that will also work.

I have a chance to buy a 686 with a 6' barrel. I think its the first generation 686 ,under the cylinder it say S&W -1, I believe . It has the wood grip also. Any how the gun looks like new ,no scratches and little wear from what the dealer showed me. The asking price is 429.00 dollars.
What do you guys think. Always wanted a 686 and this seems like a decent deal.
One last thing the dealer said the previous owner must have shot black powder shells the last time he used it and the residue is still in the barrel and cylinder. Is this a problem??
Thanks in advance for helping me make and educated decision with your help
