In fact, only a few weeks ago, the skipper of my ship ordered a evening "pacfire" (Pre-Action Calibration Firing) just to provide a "beautiful demonstration" of the Phalanx's muzzle flash for the crew and our embarked Marines. Needless to say, it was quite impressive to hear the long belch of the gun....and to see the blue and orange muzzle blast reaching out about 2-3 feet from the rotating muzzle of the gatling gun.
Hell a PAC-fire is only a hundred rounds, for real fun you need a tow target. My system was serial #200 mounted on the Puller (FFG-23). Our motto "If it flies it dies!"
