The Best Place to Find 45/70 Brass

I go with Starline. Watch their website and order it when they are taking back orders. Other than that it would be a want ad here or on any other forums you belong to.
 
I would not even bother looking for once fired 45/70 brass. I have never seen a single soul leave a single piece of 45/70 brass on the ground. Those who shoot the caliber almost always reload.

Another +1 for starline. If it isn't in stock, get on the notification list.
 
Starline. Although give them a call because it was not taking orders for quite a while and when I called they took my order saying a new production was going to start soon. It's great brass and great customer service too.
 
The Hornady leverevolution brass is a touch short, but that should not hurt anything.
The Hornady component brass is the correct length for normal 45-70 loading.
 
If you want to use the Hornady short stuff send me your address and I'll give you 20, I don't need them and don't plan to load them. I'm set up for the regular length Starline and I don't like changing things.
 
I bought some Hornady from Midsouth a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't what I would call cheap, but it was available. Buds has Hornady for around $44 for 50 plus shipping, but that link to Amazon above is a better deal if you need 100--and you will eventually.
 
Sometimes you can buy loaded ammo for less than the empty new brass. You get to shoot on them and then reload for less than buying the brass alone.
 
How many times you can reload will depend on how hot you load. Stay with the saami spec pressure loads and those cases should last for dozens of rounds. Load them into the +P range and case necks will get hard and start splitting unless you maintain a good annealing program.

For the most part yes, it's true. It's not unheard of to get 20-30 reloads on 45-70 brass. Just compare it to the .38 Special. I have well over 40 reloads on 1200 pieces of Remington .38 Special brass. I have heard of and seen .38 Special brass which was loaded so many times the headstamp is almost worn clean off. If you load Trapdoor pressure loads for the 45-70 you will generate pressures similar to standard .38 Special loads to just barely over .38 Special +P loads.

Happy to help and glad you got some ordered.
If you are shooting a lever action you'll need to resize the full length so that will work the brass more which will effect the life of the casing. A good case lube helps and I am a fan of the Imperial sizing die wax.
