"It has been confirmed in a Janury 2006 Winchester press release to the media (and subsequently in conversation with Winchester/USRAC representatives at the 2006 SHOT Show) that the Belgian Herstal Group that owns both Browning and USRAC/Winchester will be closing the Winchester factory in New Haven Connecticut on March 31, 2006. Winchester ammunition is produced by the Olin Corporation, a separate corporate entity, and is not affected by the closure."

And now for the rest of the story http://www.chuckhawks.com/column13_winchester.htm

Its sad to see Winchester going away.

The history buff in me also hates to think of all that historic paperwork being thrown into a dumpster.

That's a shame... I really like my .357 94 back-packer and was thinking of
getting others. Guess I should do it sooner rather than later. Maybe one in
.44 or .45 long colt.

The history buff in me also hates to think of all that historic paperwork being thrown into a dumpster.

I did a report in my English class about the .45-70 and learned a few things
that I did not know about them that I found interesting. Pity.... that name is
known world wide.

They're all smiles over at Handgun Control...

I think the market will replace Winchester with a better product at a better price. You want a good rifle? Try a Kimber or any one of a few dozen others out there. Nesika Bay offers a hunting action. There's Dakota, MRC and any number of other upscale actions out there. Now that a big part of the competition is gone, the little guys will have to step up to fill the demand. I predict greater choices at lower prices. It's how the free market works.

Honestly? Winchester has just been a name licensed to different companies and stamped on all kinds of stuff for years now. Yes, it's a shame to see it go, but the entity we think of when we see the name 'Winchester' died a long time ago.

It'll probably come back later. Colt and Armalite both went belly up too remember?
