The local gun shop has a Glock 22 for a good price. I was thinking about a 23 for CC and OC while hiking, but I'm a big guy and could hide a 22 on my person well enough. Does anyone have any positive or negative experiences with it? Thanks.

Carry one on a daily basis…

My department (Sizable city just south of Atlanta) only issues/approves the G22 for patrol and the G22 or G23 for plain clothes.

We are a department of 125 sworn officers, most don’t really care about the weapon, meaning they just don’t have an opinion about it, about 25 or so of us, simply put, hate the damn thing and beg the chief on a daily basis to approve personal duty weapons.

But he wants uniformity…

We had to send back earlier this year 8 brand new 22’s because every time you shot them the mags would fly out the bottom of the gun. In January of this year a neighboring Sheriffs Officer had two experience what were described to me as “Mild KB’s†both resulted in damage to the plastic frames that required the guns to be removed from service for good.

We carry the Glock for the same reason we drive Dodge Intrepids for Patrol cars, the lowest bidder made them. My department evaluated SIG’s and the HK USP in .40 when they made the jump from S&W 5906’s and the only reason we are not carrying the USP or SIG according to the Chief was price, plain and simple.

I carry a S&W 360PD .357 magnum as a hold out piece and my trusty SIG 229 in .357 SIG is never far from me in my patrol car, especially at night.

I had and carried a Glock 22 as a duty weapon for about 3 months. I HATED it. I had a series of problems with it ranging from light hits on the primer to stove pipes. Sold it, got a Ruger P94....good solid gun....but then got issued a Sig 229. Holy cow....like a beam of enlightenment from heaven. Bought 2 personal ones.

I am a BIGTIME .40 fan...but Glock simply does not make a solid .40 in my opinion. Unsupported chambers in a cartridge with that much pressure just seems like a bad idea. In .45...no problems....in 9mm....you're golden, but in .40? No go.

If you like polymer and .40s, the best I've seen is a Sig Pro 2340 with a Springfield XD being a fair distant second right alongside an H&K. H&K is just WAY over priced with a somewhat crap trigger for such an expensive weapon.

The best .40 hands down is a 229 Sig. For target shooting a .40 CZ75 B in SA or DA/SA is the best.

I have owned all the above except the H&K, which I have fired, and that is the sum of a few thousand dollars "research".

Glock 22 = Bad, problematic, ammo picky but accurate. Not a good SD gun.

Ruger P94 = takes a few hundred to work the kinks out and afterwards is solid as stone. Not terribly accurate but not terribly expensive. Good SD gun.

CZ75B = Most accurate .40...very much like the Sigs...accuracy probably had more to do with weight, bore axis, grip angle and barrel length. Excellent reliability......HEAVY for CC. Good SD gun otherwise.

Sig 229 = As accurate as the CZ if you learn to control it. Medium weight 100% reliable. A bit expensive. Best SD gun for me.

Sig 2340 = Same as Sig 229 with a little more muzzle flip due to top heavy nature of it, better to pack around by about 3 to 4 oz.

Glock 23 = Terrible hand fit. Didn't buy it but was reliable for 25 or so rounds. Still ammo picky I bet.

H&K = Expensive, heavy, accurate, not so great trigger. If ya' got the dough to blow go for it, but there are WAY better values.

XD = Reliable, good warranty, accurate enough about like the Ruger, maybe a little better. Medium weight, great value. I like the trigger.

Hope that helps.

Sheesh, I must have a factory defect G22. I shoot mine in USPSA competition, and have for the last about 5 years or so, and don't remember EVER having a malfunction in it. We shoot twice a month, and I probably shoot ~20K per year in it, and it just keeps on trucking. I try to clean it a couple times a year, other than that, it comes home and goes in the safe.

Yeah, I know three G23s is a small control group... too small to actually draw any informative opinions, but my two and my buddy's one have all been flawless from day one. Of course, neither of us shoots lead or reloads.

Between the 22 and the 23, there may not be a ton of difference in the size, but almost everyone should be able to conceal the 22 more easily than the 23. Even for $100 more, I'd go for the 23 over the 22. But I wouldn't want to go down to the 27 size. I'd stick with the 19 or 23. I'd also strongly consider the compact (mid sized) XD.

Actually, if you can tote a few more ounces, there is lots to recommend in the upcoming 40 cal CZ P-04 and I'm sure I'd gladly carry one of those over any Glock, any SIG or any XD.

My wife has a Glock 23 and she carries it everyday, she loves the gun well it started out as my gun, but when she shot it well lets put it this way, its her gun now .. She carries it in a inside the pants holster, loaded with 155gr golden sabers . She uses 155gr rem umc for training . If you like the Glock 22 go for it and only shoot fac. ammo and you will be fine. I have the Glock 21 and i love it , i carry it everyday all my other guns get left in the safe.

Glock 22. Sorry but pretty much POS. Stinking finger grooves that are suppose to fit everyone but fit very few. K-B's. Upgrades, my fanny. Honest manufacturers call them what they are - recalls- and do so without arrogance or shame, just integrity.

Polymer? Go XD40.

I can see why it is issued.
If I could open carry, and I was under intense threat, I would carry my G22.

But I can only concealed carry, and I am under very light threat, so the G22 has just been trouble free fun at the range.

My G23 is my primary defense handgun and the only problems I've had are related to worn out mag springs and/or cheap reloads. I can't imagine a G22 would be any different. Glocks have a huge following and you hear more horror stories than most other guns just because there are so many out there.

The FBI/Law enforcement issue the G22/G23 in huge numbers and if there were a real problem with them, Glock would have corrected it with updates to their manufacturing process. An example of this is the stronger frames on current .40/.357 glocks to increase durability with hotter .357 ammo.

I think your question should be, do you really like glocks, or would you be happier with a SA or DA/SA design?

It's the modern incarnation of the 4" square-butt Model 10: The Generic Cop Gun.

When a gun's only real "flaws" are that it's slightly bulky and awfully mundane, that's saying something.

If you are large enough to conceal a G22 might as well stick with it. I would recommend you choose whichever size you can reasonably conceal while moving around and doing stuff. Any of the available sizes of .40 Glocks will get the job done, pick the one that you are most comfortable with.

I carried and shot a 22 for over three years. Never a problem, never a malfunction. The so-called "dangerous unsupported chamber" is way overblown (no pun intended). There are plenty of pistols that do not have fully supported chambers (the correct term), including the 1911 (which is my current carry weapon). In over three years I examined every piece of brass to come out of that pistol for case bulge and found none.

I'm not saying they are all "perfect" as lemons do exist, but if you keep it clean and follow factory directions you will be OK. Mine was accurate enough to do what needed done, but a 1911 or Sig it ain't. If I had to carry a 22 again I would in a hearbeat and not feel uneasy about it at all.

I've never had a Glock 22, but the Glock 23 was the single most inaccurate weapon I have ever shot by a wide margin. It really turned me off the .40 S&W for a long time. For my money, just about EVERY service .40 S&W on the market is better than a Glock 22/23 (unless you're buying from the low bidder).

Shot one for probably 5 years or more, got a 1911, sold the Glock for another 1911 and haven't been happier. Zero gun problems or jams with the Glock or the 1911's and the Glock just didn't fit my hands well at all. If it works for you, use it. If not, find something else that does.

I carry a G22

concealed very frequently, in a Tucker Texas Heritage IWB tuckable holster. I am a medium-framed guy and it conceals just fine. I can carry it for just about any activity without worry. And it has never malfunctioned sine purchase in 1993, all of the ammo after the first two boxes being handloads.

I've had a Glock 22 since 1994. I haven't had a problem yet. Of course mine hasn't blown up yet, still waiting... I shoot Glocks better than any other handguns I've ever shot. I owned a Glock 23 and it really snapped your wrist when compaired to the 22. Mine does not have finger grooves, I really don't like the newer ones because of the grooves.
