Maggie, Barbie & Stephanie get lesson on gun safety

By Stephanie Bell Flynt - bio | email

BYRAM, MS (WLBT) - Walk into any gun store, and you'll notice not only a shortage of weapons, but also a shortage of ammunition. Gun sales have skyrocketed among men and women. For that reason alone, gun safety is more important than ever.

Since 2002 almost 5,000 Americans have died in firearms accidents. More than half of them were children. And while more and more Americans are buying guns for personal protection, many of them have never been properly trained.

There's no law saying gun owners must be trained on how to use them. But if you are considering buying a firearm there are plenty of people out there who teach gun safety. The person who sold you the gun can probably point you in the right direction. If not, the internet is a good source for local instruction.

Gun safety courses are inexpensive, and most importantly might save a life. Cliff Cargill, a certified NRA instructor, says it is essential for every gun owner to know the four laws of gun safety.

Four laws of gun safety

1. Assume all guns are loaded.

2. Never point a gun at anything you are not willing to destroy.

3. Always be sure of your target

4. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
