I hope I'm posting this in the correct area, this isn't meant to be a political rant.

I'm curious if anyone here reads The Guardian online. It is a baffling news organization to me. I read their coverage of the NSA spying program quite a bit as its usually very thorough. They also have an entire section devoted to gun control in the United States, which is odd in itself considering they are a British journalism organization. My issue with them as far as it relates to gun control is this: how can they be so dogged in their criticism of the US's NSA program yet totally support efforts to ban guns as much as possible in the US? Do they not understand that they are condemning the persecution of one of our most basic rights (the 4th amendment) while at the same time completely supporting the demolition of another (the 2nd amendment). The comments section is usually very interesting and lively as well - many Americans participating in the debates on both issues; most hate the NSA but love gun control, I'm talking about the Americans....the British commentators just seem to dislike us in general. Do they just not get it?

Just my thoughts. It's difficult for me to reconcile.

Before these geniuses start criticizing another country's laws, they need to look in their own backyard first.

We won the Revolutionary War and won the War of 1812, they should get over it already....

As a former Lincolnshire householder, I've always thought them a bunch of officious, self-righteous nannying prats: won't stop prattling, even when it's none of their business and they've little idea what they're talking about. Far too much "for your own good" editorial agenda mixed into their journalism. Being a bit populist, but without much entertainment value, their primary appeal seems to be to middle-aged pseudointellectials. Definitely NOT a well reputed top-drawer news publication.

The Guardian's opinion of the U.S. is a bit like the New York Times' opinion of Texas.... irrelevant.

The Guardian, from what I understand, is an avowedly left-wing socialist rag these days that counters the Conservative press over there. It is deeply anti-Israeli and has old ties to the USSR/Russia. The British left is not exactly parallel to the US left, so some of its positions seem odd to us. As far as gun control, ALL of the British rags even the right wing ones tend to be for gun control and use the US as an example of the kind of anarchy that comes from letting people have firearms. Remember it was the establishment aristocracy that first pushed for gun control there 100 years back as a way of keeping the great unwashed from breaking wind in the palaces of the mighty. And even today they seek only to protect a small elite of shotgunners and sporting shooters.

I read them quite a bit, along with the Daily Telegraph. The British Press often run American political stories that are never mentioned here. For example when Vice-President Al Gore's son was arrested for possession of pot in the mid-90's.

Yes, the Guardian is well known for it's Left-wing ideology, but then so is the New York Times and Washington Post. You just need to keep in mind their ideology when reading their articles, just as you would any other news source. They tell things from their point of view, and at least they don't try to pretend that they are non-political like our deceitful Press does.
