I don't see any huge advantages but I also don't think the disadvantages are as big of a deal as they could be made out to be.
I'll admit that when I carry, I often just stick my handgun in my pocket or carry IWB without carrying a spare magazine.
Maybe not the best idea but I figure that a handgun with seven rounds on me is still better than no handgun at all and more importantly, it works FOR ME in my life just about any time I need to carry.
But by that logic, I'd agree that five or six rounds of .357 or .45 LC might just be better than seven rounds of 9mm.
I'd say that if in your life you can carry a full sized handgun or you can somehow conceal a single action revolver and go on about your business, go for it.
 
I would be comfortable with it. IMO the "tactical reload" etc. is pretty overblown. The statistics FOR CIVILIANS tend to indicate that we almost never reload in a gunfight. And of course the statistics also make it clear that we almost never fire the gun in a gunfight -- just having the gun is enough to "win" most of the time.
