The Joys of Rural Delivery and the 6mm Sidewinder

The O.P. said it came with dies. Just loading or with forming not stated.

There are not too many choices for a parent case. If it is on the small (Vixen) action, it would most likely be based on a .222, .222 Magnum, or .223. Have to be an old one to be a 6mm x Hornet or Bee.

I believe it was a Custom L461 - which if i'm not mistaken would make it the vixen action. It was definitely small. Not big enough for a 308 or 243 I don't think.

Now that i've had some time to poke around and find out more info about these things (not very well versed in Sako) - i'm slowly starting to kick myself more and more. Don't really have the money to spend on modifying it though, and i'd kinda like to buy something I can shoot today - not 6 months from now...

edit: they didn't say what dies it came with - just "it comes with dies".

Measure the bolt face diameter. That will give you a hint. Then buy some Cerro Safe for $6= postage and make a chamber cast . I'm betting 6 mm x .222 mag which is a wonderful wildcat!

Very likely somebody's idea of a 6mm - .222 Magnum (6x47) Improved to call it "Sidewinder".

I'd want a chamber cast to see how "improved" it was and likely try to fireform brass a la Gibbs. If you paid me to. I have loaded for one wildcat and one obsolete that had to be treated like a wildcat and they are enough for me.

As Gordon said, measure the bolt face, if they will let you. That will tell you whether it is a standard, or lge. dia. vixen for the 6mm PPC.
Am enclosing a photo and part of an article that I read.
Have emailed the Reno store, but no reply, as yet.

Are we 100% sure it was a 'Sidewinder' & not a 'Copperhead' (confusing our snake-breeds)? The 6mm Copperhead was the .222Remington necked up, which would give it the correct case head size for a Sako Vixen. Just a thought!

Just heard back from Cabelas in Reno. They want $550. Said that it is not a complete set of dies, and appears to be 2 sizing dies, with the de-capping pin broken on one of them. He also said they are marked RCBS, but, I have already asked RCBS, was told they never heard of a 6mm Sidewinder.
Too bad, I was really giving it some serious thought.
