Some will stop at nothing to protect us from ourselves. I think this is particularly interesting in light of the possible ban on importation of certain knives that was discussed in another thread.

First 'anti-stab' knife to go on sale in Britain

The first “anti-stab” knife is to go on sale in Britain, designed to work as normal in the kitchen but to be ineffective as a weapon.

The knife has a rounded edge instead of a point and will snag on clothing and skin to make it more difficult to stab someone.

It was invented by industrial designer John Cornock, who was inspired by a documentary in which doctors advocated banning traditional knives.

Mr Cornock, 42, from Swindon, said that the knife will cut vegetables, but will make it almost impossible to stab someone to death and will reduce the risk of accidental injuries.

He said: “It can never be a totally safe knife, but the idea is you can’t inflict a fatal wound. Nobody could just grab one out of the kitchen drawer and kill someone.”

The knife is expected to sell for around £40-50 and has been tested with “very favourable” results by the Home Office’s Design and Technology Alliance - set up to research products that can deter crime.

Has Britain also banned files, sharpening stones, bench grinders, sand paper and all sorts of other tools that could be used to put a point back on those knives?

So let me get this right, England is going to officially become the first nation of kindergarteners with safety scissors?

And it is not like England is known for blades, so it shouldn't hurt them as much as it would if it were Germany or Italy

Wow. It is so humorous when someone who is completely unfamiliar with the properties of and techniques for using a weapon attempts to redesign (or legislate) one.

Those both would still make pretty reasonable weapons if the need arose! "Snag on clothing?" "..more difficult to stab?" I'd bet most of us could grab one of those and stab it through a car door, given incentive and enough room to wind up for the shot.

Some people need better thought editors...

You ban guns and they'll use knives. You ban knives and they'll use clubs. If somebody wants to kill someone bad enough there's not a thing the government can do about it. As the saying goes "I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy." A government can't provide each citizen with a body guard, what it can do is stop infringing on its citizen's right to self defense. Just when you think Britain couldn't take it any farther they go and do something like this.

Reminds me: The British Libertarian party sent a copy of 1984 to every member of parliament with a note that said, "this book was a warning, not an instruction manual."

Safety nazi idiocy aside the designer of this knife has obviously never done a lot of cooking and selected his test subjects from the same group. Either that or him and his test subjects are all vegitarians that never use a knife for anything more than chopping. On my own kitchen knives the point is frequently used to trace around bones for removing the meat to do my infamous stir fries.

Besides, this would never work as a steak knife for the same reasons. So are they going to ban steak knives as well or will the disraught person just be forced to reach down to the next drawer?

Lord protect us from those that want to protect us.....

I'm no fan of lawsuits, but somebody ought to sue Mr. Cornock for this statement if he is in any way profiting from sales of this knife. None of the very basic defensive techniques I was taught for use of a short, edged weapon involve the point.
