Right behind you!!
I've never seen one of these Moisin Naguant critters, but I frequently hear about them being the Hammer of Thor (on both ends) and the thunderbolt of Zeus rolled up into one. Is there something to the hype? I'm beginning to suspect that these comments are the result of people who are coming from an assault rifle background and are just taken aback by the power, recoil and range of what I like to call a real rifle.

Or would I be entirely off-base?

they have a mild kick. its more of a running joke, for those who have "yet to feel the loving touch of Sergei Mosin."

im far from an "assault rifle" background and hardly find the MN unpleasant to shoot. most of the remarks about the kick come from M44 and M38 shooters. in that case your taking a full size rifle cartridge and shooting it out of a tiny little carbine. and even then its more "shock and awe" than real hits.( short barrel= lots of noise and flash)

also has to do with how you shoulder the rifle ( Western Vs Russian style)

i suggest you spend the under 100$ ( for the rifle AND a days worth of ammo) and find out for yourself. im sure you will fall in love and buy many more

The recoil and noise isn't any worse than a 1903 or M48 and the accuracy isn't any better than anything else I have shot in the past. But at $69.00 they are a lot of bang for your buck.

I think it's all in the metal butt plate that leads to those comments. Throw in a 100+ rounds in a day and your shoulder will be sore for sure.

After my first trip to the range I QUICKLY bought a rubber butt pad for it. Its not unpleasant at all with it. Love shooting it.

I shot some Barnaul ammo through my M44, and it was "unpleasant". The stuff was loaded really hot, and 7 out of 10 necks were split after shooting. After 20 shots, I had enough.

With hand loads, these old war horses are most excellent! Accurate and fun to shoot, even. I really like mine....and my other one....and my other one....:)

The rifles don't kick very much and can have decent accuracy to boot.
The carbines make a lot of noise and a bit more recoil, but aren't worth writing home about otherwise.

yeah..but you can use them for a boat oar, tent pegs, fire wood,club.....and so on...they are great rifles, fun and inexpensive to shoot..and a great price tag, everyone needs at least one

Yeah, they do kick, but it only starts to hurt after a goodly number of rounds have been sent downrange.

also has to do with how you shoulder the rifle ( Western Vs Russian style)

Interesting... so what are the differences? Is the Russian method less painful? Discuss.

western style you "blade" your body to the target. trying to make a slimmer profile. russian style is a more square to the target.

russian is less "painfull" probibly due to the larger contact area of the butt weld. its not so much a "West V East" its jut most americans shoot across thier chest. bladed to the targe, where as a military rifle its better suited to a squared up shoulder

If you don't think that a MN doesn't knock the snot out of you then get some heavy ball (Silver Bear Oughta do it). Send a box down range from the bench and think about it. Your shoulder will promptly let you know just how you really feel. I have been shooting all of my born days and I know that steel plate could use a limb saver "size small". Makes a world of difference.

My M38 beat me up with surplus ammo, and made quite the "boom". When I started shootingthe 91/30, it was pleasantly easier on the shoulder, and more accurate.
The easist shooting milsurp is the Enfield 303...

I don't know about you guys...

...but I must be one tough BAMF. I can shoot my M44 as long as I want without it hurting. Maybe after 300 rounds I may get a slight flinch, but that's it. I shoot 200 grain Brown Bear out of it and Czech silvertip. I'm not sure which kicks more, but I believe the brown bear to be downloaded somewhat. I hope to reload for this round in the future, so maybe I can test the limits of the round.

In retrospect, my future brother-in-law, who looks to have more meat on his bones than I do, gets bruises and red rash-looking spots on his shoulder where he fires these rifles. I don't get it. I'm 6' 170, but I think he weighs more than I do and we're nearly the same height.

Probably not an inaccurate assessment. I'm an EBR guy, and also have a Mosin 28/30. However, I cut my teeth on bolt-action 30-06's. I read all the accounts of Mosins as well. But when I fire mine, all I think is "it's about like my 30-06-- nothing special."

"300 rounds of milsurp per session?"

Last range session with my future brother in law. We shot a lot that day. :)

Kick feels like a mild 12ga. from my 38 and 44s. Couple hundred rounds is easy to do with no pain after. Just hold square to your shoulder and the buttplate won't slide or bruise you

One BANG! and you'll be hooked.

LOL.

PS: For maximum effect, try this at dusk.

I'd say that they are like a 12ga. or so.

My first evening shooting I was done after 20rds. and my shoulder was stiff for a day and a half. My body was bladed to the target and I was wedged into a wall real tight. I spun me alittle bit.

Next time I went out, I relaxed and squared up to the target. Easily shot 100rds in 2 hours that day, with no pain and no lasting effects. Both shooting days were within a week of each other. I'm a medium to small guy with bony shoulders but technique seemed to fix all the problems.:neener:

Once you learn to PULL the butt into your shoulder, you'll be fine. I think a lot of people are also shooting with the rifle high on the shoulder, like you can with an AR or AK. MNs do NOT work that way, you want the entire butt plate tucked firmly in place.

A <$10 Butler Creek slip-on pad "tamed the beast" that my M-44 was whne shooting 'Heavy Ball' ammo.

11, part of it is the "and everyone was looking at ME" aspect of why people buy guns (guys who mainly shoot CKCs and .22s and then get a $70 "real rifle"). It is merely a .30-'06 in an inexpensive (thus many threads) platform.

No reason to be apprehensive about a dinky '06 level cartridge. I believe you are entirely on base.:)
