The Mighty Mosin

The short Mosin rifles have....

a pretty good kick and a spectacular fireball from the muzzle. They are fun to shoot near the unwashed at the range. Remember, The Mosin Nagant rifles were the assult rifles of the Russians in WW1, WW2, and the Koreans in the korean war and the Vietnamese during the vietnam war. Ballistics are similar to a 3006. A good accurate round. The rifles captured by Finland, they are marked with a boxed SA on the left side of the barrel chamber, are usually the most accurate. I have several that will do minute of angle at 100 meters....chris3

I like the M44, I don't feel it has excessive kick. It does have a blast effect because of the shorter barrel but I fine it is a handy sized rifle with good power.

So where can I get a $69.00 Mosin as posted earlier in this thread? The cheapest I have seen them in person is >$100 at Dunham's.

Once you learn to PULL the butt into your shoulder, you'll be fine. I think a lot of people are also shooting with the rifle high on the shoulder, like you can with an AR or AK. MNs do NOT work that way, you want the entire butt plate tucked firmly in place.
Mosins have a fairly short stock, which probably accounts for that.

Mosins are stout rifles, but no more than any other of similar caliber (Springfield 1903, Mauser K98, Enfield, etc).

Someone stated the the m-44 kicks so bad is because is a lighter carbine version of the Mosin-Nagant. It actually weights in about a half pound heavier than the rifle version. The kick is from the shorter barrel.

Grimjaw, GREAT video. I like the way you caught the flash, which reminds me: Does anyone know the Russian for "Marshmallow Toaster"?

Their appeal lies in their accuracy, their power and their cost. If you're interested, spend $75 and buy a 91/30. You won't regret it

If you like it, buy Finn M39. They have better barrels so they're much more accurate, they have a smooth, 2-stage trigger, They are heavier, so less recoil, and they have a semi-pistol grip stock so are more comfortable to shoulder.

Does anyone know the Russian for "Marshmallow Toaster"?
I could easily find out, but I don't know how to type the Cyrillic alphabet characters.

pawnshops. gunshops. importers if you have C&R. 69$ may be optimistic, but isnt unbelieveable

Interordnance.com has some M44's - I bought one from them for $65 with matching #'s. They might also have the 91/30's - not sure as I wasn't shopping for those. Classic Arms also sells the M44 in very nice laminate for about $100.

It's not that Mosins require some special shouldering technique, it's just that, like any rifle with a metal butt and a full-power cartridge, they are not very forgiving of incorrect butt placement. Get it anywhere but right in the pocket, and you will be in for some pain.

Physics, particularly when applied to firearms, is a downright b5. Guns don't kill people, but they sure can kick the crap out of them. :neener:

Made the mistake of shooting my very-short-barrel M-N (16 1/16" or something) at an indoor range (weather's been too crappy to get to the club lately). After five rounds I felt bad for the guy in the other rifle lane and packed it in.
