So many good hollow points, so little money
.
I carry Speer Gold Dots also (.38, .357, 9mm, .45). They are IME an accurate load, and the bonded core design gives the best combination of expansion and penetration. YMMV, but I like them
.
Most of the available hollow points on the market are designed to comply with FBI specs for penetration and expansion. I have not tried any of the all copper types (Corbon DPX, etc), but they look like good performers.
I may be opening up a big can of worms with what I am fixin' to say, but the most awesome hollow points I have personally used have been the Lead Hollow Base Wadcutters loaded backwards in the .38 and .357. I know that over the past 70 years or so hollow base bullets loaded backward for self defense have been controversial at best, but the several small animals I have shot with them (squirrels, rabbits, skunks, etc) have literally EXPLODED when hit. I know small animals aren't people, but I was impressed with the bullet performance
.
Has anyone ever produced the bullets designed by Jim Cirillo? I just recently read his book, and they looked impressive. With Jim passing away recently, hopefully it won't keep somebody from producing them.
Just my .02,
