The only privately owned firing howitzer in the US?

Well, Ours Is Not A Howitzer, But...

We do have a WWII M3 Stuart light tank sitting right on Main Street in our town (Pe Ell WA). It has been there for decades. I highly doubt it is a BP gun (so I'm off-topic) and it has not moved an inch since it was put there. The town did erect a covered "tankport" a few years ago to help protect it from the winter rains.

I think I'm gonna invite Hillary, Diane, Barbara, and numerous others to our July 4th parade and celebration and see how horrified they are that we own a WMD!

How many tanks in private or small-town ownership have you folks got? I would be very interested. Maybe we should start a new thread instead of hijacking this one.

Wow!

expat I loved the haunted tank in G.I. Comics back in the day. That was a m3 I think.

I remember those somewhat but I can't remember what specific magazine/comic book it was. The main theme was about JEB Stuart (ghost) in WWII and the Stuart tank leading the crew to victory, or not so much. I remember the printed graphics as awesome for the day. Long time ago.

That was before I got into Civil War history and, as a kid, I did not connect the dots, if there were any at that time.

Now you are making me remember things I have not thought about in decades. I'll probably wake up in the middle of the night thinking about it.

Thanks so much!

If I Was A Progressive Political Candidate

I would have the BATFE all over it! THAT is a WMD! There should be no reason for any sane person to legally own a weapon anywhere near this magnitude! It is an affront upon America that such weapons are legal, and this type of behavior should be legislated as illegal in the interest of the safety and security of the citizens of America.

Hi, Hillary.

Double down, folks. It's coming to a town/county/state near you.

I can recall the two muzzle loading civil war cannon sitting in front of the Capitol here for years, along with many smaller scale replicas of famous items and statues - Lady Liberty, the Washington Monument, the Liberty Bell, etc. All were removed during the last Old Capitol renovation and moved...... 'somewhere'. Wish they'd put them back into place!

Very cool. I met a man in Dallas Texas who had quite a collection of tanks, machine-guns, and, as he said, the only operational 88mm cannon in the United States, which he said he purchased from Aberdeen proving grounds.

That big cannon in the video above was massive.

there are two of the three inch guns used for salutes at The Citadel. In years past Cadets would attempt to drop things down the barrels as they marched by for parades until they finally moved the guns back a bit. A wad of firecrackers launched and lit by a blank can be interesting.

The Citadel also has a Sherman tank, a WAC Corporal Miss1le, a 37 mm AT gun, a Phantom Jet, One or more 24 pounder coastal gun barrels, the periscope assembly to a British sub that once haulked Mark Clark to North Africa.

There is another 3 inch at Starke Florida facing south on 441 in a Y intersection.

I believe the cannon on the "steps" ( actually one of three over sized steps that boarder the actual steps) of the Florida Capital where 6 pounders. When I asked where they had gone at the State Museum behind the capital some years ago I was told there had never been cannons on the front of the capital. Interesting as they were the high point of our trip to the old Sears in Tallytown and my parents more than once let me go play on them.

Over in Quincy there was a guy that had a 6 pounder in his front yard for years and no idea what happened to it in the late 60's.

There is an 8 inch howitzer in tow configuration in Williston FL. I will see if I still have some photos of that.

I think a thread for war monument weaponry would be neat IF the mods would give us a break on the BP thing for it so more modern cannon etc can be posted without fear of being moved or deleted.

In keeping with BP though here is a doctored shot of the real 3 inch rifle displayed in Archer Fl for events that is privately owned. I Photoshopped out some modern stuf and tourists just to make it look better.

There are 75mm Pack Howitzers on many military posts and in local city parks all over this country. There are also still many French 75mm WWI cannon in parks and such.

There was a 3 inch US gun howitzer M 1905 at Petersens gunshop in central Florida. This gun was developed after the Mondragon and Saucy Cans and was of the type of gun hauled off to Mexico in 1914 with Pershing. My unserstanding is that it was technically a better gun than the Mondragon or French 1897 but was more difficult to produce. The US declared it obsolete in 1917 to be replaced by the US M1917, a US produced French 1897 Saucy Cans.

Last seen it was in very poor shape.

In1936 the 1917s were up graded with pneumatic wheels and a new carriage to make them towable by trucks and such. They actually saw combat as late as 1942 in Africa, with of all folks, US Rangers (mounted in White Half-trucks)in addition to artillery. They were phased out in favor of the 105.

Here are the trunnion markings of what appeared to be a 12 pounder GH barrel on display in I believe Tallmedge Ohio or one of the nearby towns. The muzzle was marked 11 OHIO and I was told the gun had been stolen a number of times and returned , the last time to have the rotten old carriage stripped off and the thing mounted in concrete.

Also I believe in the same Ohio park (If not Tallmedge then the neighboring drag racing place) was this 3 inch AT gun.

Doesn't everyone need a full scale model of a 24 pounder siege gun one can not to decide to mount for firing or transport on their front porch? I was told it is a model of wood but did not walk up to see it un announced.

Also in or near Tallmedge. The wife has folks up there and we got to do some boating on the lake and naturally a trip to Cedar Point.

Just to make you guys cry. Someone once offered me a "scrapped" (Breech welded partially open and chamber cut) 75mm pack howitzer if I would haul it off. Not having an actual place of my own then (But I imagine no one else in the apartment complex would have bothered me with it in the hall) I turned them down. They are dead and gone and their son knows what it is worth now.:(

The revolvers below were in a display with the Archer FL battery and I could not positively ID the relic. Rather long looking cylinder, eh?

The other photo is so the kid gives scale to the little model Parrot gun. The wheels I was told had to be out of scale to deal with the weight of the tube. It fires BP blank charges.

OK I promise to stop after this.

I tried to get artsy with the arty by photo shopping to B&W and cutting out some annachronisoms (You did not really believe I would spell that right?)

also from the Battle of Oulustee (Ocean Pond) FL re enactment 2004 is a shot of about a quarter of the gun line that year.

Once charges got rammed I was called back from down range ( but well off to the side) by a nervous park ranger.
