The Pardner Pump Thread

Well, my Pardner Protector came in today. Haven't shot it, but looks good so far... :)

Went to get a shotgun and the guy at the store I go to recommended the Pardner Pump so after the idiotic 10 day wait here in California I will pick it up. He said they sell a ton of them, never had one come back, and said it was worth every penny - $ 200.00 - So a Pardner "Protector" it is. After I got back went on internet and saw noting but good reviews/comments about the gun except for the Chi -Com stuff. I buy American when ever I can and If H&R/Marlin/Remmington/...... want to have a gun with their respected name on it as a U.S. company then so be it. Some of the cry baby comments have likely come from people who drive Dodge -MADE IN MEXICO- trucks - manufactured by Frogs and UAW flaks and obama. So what is better, a non-union Toyota truck made in America or a FROG/UAW/obama Dodge made in Mexico? Don't care - just want to get the protector and put a Burris Fullfield II on it. The "red dot" will cost as much as the gun but I won't miss. Now I'm thinking about an 982. Will see.

I finally got out to shoot my new Pardner Protector shotgun today. I am happy with my purchase and think it will work well for what I want- a reliable, cheap, HD/beater gun. I would post pictures but it looks pretty boring. I payed $187 OTD with $10 background check.

Overall I would rate it as follows...

Fit/finish: 6/10. NOT anything to write home about, I had it in a humid environment for a few days and it developed surface rust almost everywhere. My Beretta Cougar, OTOH, was fine.

Overall function: 8/10. It cycles easily, shoots fine, recoil is mild. I had a Remington 870 express to compare to and they do the same thing and feel essentially the same. The 870 was $300.

Ease of cleaning/dis-assembly: 6/10. It was pretty easy to take apart, but I would recommend using a channel-lox on the magazine tube nut, it works its way loose during firing.

Durability: 8/10. I haven't had it very long, but everything is made out of steel and shouldn't break within the bounds of reason. Stock is plastic and doesn't look fragile at all.

Price: 10/10. You really can't do better.

Overall.... well if you buy it I'm sure it will do just fine. It doesn't feel or point anywhere near as good as my Beretta AL2, and it isn't pretty, but if you are buying a gun with an 18" barrel and a long magazine, that's a given. Since my HD gun isn't going to be very useful for hunting or skeet, I don't see the need to buy something nice, just something functional. YMMV

A Parkerized finish should be soak in oil or grease for a few days to make it rust resistant and more durable. Heat it with a hair dryer to speed up the process.

There is nothing pretty about a parkerized finish but it provides much more surface protection than a blue finish when properly treated. It will soak up oil like a sponge and hold it.

The protector is a utility defense shotgun, it's not suppose to be pretty.

GC

All the same, my Beretta handgun and my AR-15 have WAY better parkerizing. Not complaining, just calling it like I see it.

I've pretty well decided to get one after reading way too much about a good HD shotty. I want a Saiga 12, but given the cost after converting it and whatnot, I think the Protector will do just fine.
Has anyone installed an ATI Shotforce stock or any other accessories on their PPP that they really like or really dislike? I read that these things kick like a mule...
It's going to be purely a home defense weapon, so would a flashlight, laser or anything else make good sense from a cost/benefit viewpoint?
Thanks in advance

I'm loving my Protector. Absolutely flawless operation.
I've fought one too many "Buy Amer'kin!" battles in the past, so I'll stay out of this one.

She's not going to win a beauty contest any time soon but she goes 'BOOM' every time she's asked.

I'm planning on getting an extra barrel for skeet. It's just so fun to shoot.

Recoil is not bad at all. It comes with a thick rubber pad and 3" Mags Are fine for me. I wouldn't bother with accessories. A red dot on an 18" shotgun is way more precision than you need, unless you are trying to shoot slugs at 50+ yards.

I agree with Pb, the recoil on these aren't bad at all. The butt pad out of the box is better than a lot of after market pads. Nothing to worry about at all.
The only reason I got a Knoxx is because it's an HD gun that my wife may have to use in my absence. We have drastically different LOP's, I'm almost all the way out, she's all the way in, so the Knoxx works well for us. The added benefit of reduced recoil for her is a bonus. She's a fairly girly girl, so any reduction in recoil will help her. But for an average guy, it's very manageable.

I'm not a fan of red dots on shotty's, but it's just a preference thing. In my house a flash light makes much more sense. I have a flashlight and a mount, I just need to pick up a longer screw to make it work. Once I do, I'll post an updated picture.

I was thinking of doing this as well... any recommendations for something cheap and bright that doesn't use weird batteries?

I got this LED flashlight, works great.

I have never seen a brighter LED light. It’s so bright I would actually consider it my first line of defense. You get hit right in the eyes in a dark room (something I accidentally did to myself in the attic one day), you won’t be seeing anything for the next 30 seconds. The main beam BRIGHT with a secondary cone beam that helps light up the room as well.

Can’t beat the price, they come in a package of two for $30 (Sams Club). I plan on keeping one on the night stand and one on the Protector. It takes 3 AAA batteries (included), so no weird battery packs or charging to worry about.

The flashlight is 1” diameter which is what most shotty flashlight mounts are made for. I’ve already spaced it out and it fits right on the end of the mag tube. Its on/off switch is on the back cap which is perfect for this placement. With my left hand on the forend, my thumb is right there by the switch.

If you Google it you may find that there were some problems with the battery assembly breaking fairly easily but these issues were resolved about a year ago. I haven’t had any problem with mine so I think I might have gotten one of the first batch of new ones. Even if it breaks, reports are that the customer service is great. Just tell them something broke and they send you a new one, no questions asked (note: I haven’t had to do this, it’s just what I heard). And at $15/per… I’m not all that worried about having to buy a replacement.

The mount I got was just a simple ATI mount. It’s used to either reinforce a mag extension to the barrel or (and it says this right on the package) to attached a 1” diameter flashlight to the mag tube. Only problem is, at least on the Protector, the bolt that comes with it isn’t long enough to use for the flashlight setup. I just haven’t had a chance to go to Home Depot to get a replacement that’s about a 1/8 inch longer.

While I admit I haven't yet actually shot the gun with the flashlight on and attached, I have dropped it multiple times on hardwood floors from a considerable distance (8+ feet) and it didn't so much as flicker. I think it'll be fine.

Even if you don’t put one on your gun, I highly recommend these flashlights.

anyone ever find where to get replacement parts for 20ga pardner pumps? The ogauges other than 12 seem to not be interchangeable with 870 parts.

I have the Pardner Pump Compact, it has the 21" barrell and walnut stock and forearm. It's as pretty as a speckled pup and I can't think of anything I would want to change on it other than the type of shotshells it shoots.:)

When I bought my Pardners, I did so after seeing that they were built just the way I figured a field shotgun should be built.

I had not considered the aftermarket accessories because it's good to go as it is.

Truth be told, I did not even care for aftermarket stuff for this gun because I did not think that there was any compatibility with anything but NEF stuff.

But hey, what do I know?:D

Cool, I'll see if I can snag one of those K2 lights. 150 lumens should be more than enough

Question about those Knoxx pistol grip stocks.. isn't it hard to reach the pump release while holding a pistol grip?

While it’s not quite as 'natural' to hit the release as with the standard stock, you can still reach it without changing hand position. You just have to pivot your wrist a little bit, at least I do.
Not an issue at all for me.

I've got two NEF Pardner's, a .20 gauge and a .12 "Protector".

Both are rock solid and have never given me a trace of trouble.

Trust me, her last words were not "HAHA, you can't get me with that imported shotgun"...

I love my 20 ga. compact! I know some folks can't get past the made in China aspect, but it's just a nice shotgun and i can't find any faults with it.

I especially like the walnut, I would oil the finnish,as has Max100 advises.

I have had no rust issues at all and I used breakfree CLP for getting the finish oiled up. It seems to soak into the matte finish

Great Photos!

Just picked up my Pardner Protector. Aside from the obvious, how can H&R/Marlin/Remmington sell that gun for $200.00 I'll never know. I had a Mossberg 590 with GRS and yes it was a nice gun but I could buy two of these and have some $$$ left over compared to the 590. The Pardner Protector is every bit as nice as the 590. Inspected it carefully - very impressed. Still intending to get the Pentax Game Seeker Red Dot for $69.00 because I like to shoot slugs.
