The Rifleman

Those pictures have been proven to be fakes.

Frankly I certainly hope so. The Rifleman comes on a local channel everyday here and I watch them often. But there is not much that surprises me anymore. You just never know.

It seems that the show was anti handgun. Lucas never packed a handgun and as pointed out earlier, he even jerry rigged a stock when he was forced to use one.
The bad guys had handguns.
Mad Magazine did a satire, and Lucas explained that he used a rifle because there was more room on the stock for notches.

Made sense to me.

Well Josh Randall had the ridiculous "Mares Leg" cut up Model 92. He had a belt full of 30-06 ammo? Fess Parker's Kentucky rifle had a higher rate of fire than an M-16. They wore six guns tied to their legs.:D Revolvers were tied down while riding a horse not gun fights. But that was the Westerns of the 1950-1960 era. Maybe we need some of that fun stuff today.;)

A kid I grew up with cut a notch in the stock of his BB gun every time he killed a bird. The Red Rider I had belonged to my dad and I didn't dare cut any notches in it. There was an article by Ross Seyfried in Rifle magazine and one old gun he wrote about had over 200 small tacks in the buttstock in a circular pattern for all the deer that had been killed with that gun. It looked pretty cool.

Dog Soldier I have read that the ammo in Josh Randalls belt were 45/70 rounds. I have also read he didn't really like that gun.

And yes we need more shows like that today. Because of the crap shown on TV these days i don't watch televsion much anymore.

Rat Shoot, You are correct. It was .45-70. The show's producer thought the little .44-40 rounds looked too small. My Red Ryder was my constant companion. To this day when I drop my Mdl 92 .44 into the saddle scabbard, I think of that old BB gun.:)

I wore out that Red Rider BB gun. One day it just broke. But I bet I sent 5000 BBs down the barrel all by myself. My Marlin 357 lever gun is my favorite of all the firearms I own. I own around 70 plus guns but that one is going to the happy hunting ground with me. Dog Soldier you sound like you watched all the old time cowboys shows same as me. Do you remember the episode on Bonanza where they were reloading 45 Colt rounds? And they were using Black Powder too. I remember the cases were almost full to the top. I have only had one other person that said they remembered seeing that scene.

I still have my Daisy 111 BB gun. I need to get a replacement stock and trigger spring to return it to full function. I was around 7 when I got it for Christmas and I'm 58 now so it's 51 years old and still will shoot.

Ratshoot, No, but then my memory is getting more foggy each year. I am sure I watched all of those. I did get to see Roy Rogers Dale amd Pat. After I was older and working on a government project during Vietnam I got lucky.
I worked with a friend of Rory Calhoun of the movies and "The Texan" series. I was able to meet Mr. Calhoun and talk about many of the old stars. Problem was, I was much taller than he? I thought he would be a Giant.:)

I was going to call you on the 30/06 thing but Ratshooter beat me to it. Those 45/70 rounds have always looked wrong to me, even back in the day when the show was airing. I have been watching the series again on the encore channel and they look really wrong now. Just too darn big for the gun.

I was a lefty until a sudden stop after falling out of a tree took care of that. I was a righty by the time my arm healed. I can still do quite a few thing as good with one hand as the other but not everything. I tell people that watch me switching hands that I'm kind of ambidextrous. Cant' do anything worth a hoot with either hand.

I sure wish I still had the Daisy Red Rider I had when I was a kid, or even one of small (I think they were called "Cubs") Daisy BB guns. I bought a new Red Rider a few years back thinking it would bring back fond memories. All it did was make me wish I'd have hung onto one of the Daisy BB guns I used to have. The new Red Rider has a lot of plastic parts, and I don't think it's nearly as powerful as any one of the BB guns I had in my youth.

My wife says, "Awww, cool! He's really young there!"
I say, "Good Lord! Can you imagine trying to shove those shells in through that little loading port?!"
Before it was brought up in this thread, I never noticed how massive the cartridges in his belt are compared to the size of his mare's leg.
Unrealistic or not, I still like most of the old TV Westerns, including this one.:)

I read, or heard somewhere that hollywierd DID get the film backwards at one point in the movie "True Grit" with John Wayne. In that scene where he was using that Spencer to shoot at those cowboys, it appears like he's shooting left-handed. But John Wayne actually shot right handed - at least that's what I heard.

Heck, I just watched Rough Rider's with Berenger. In one scene as they are fighting their way up Kettle Hill, one of the actors is holding a left handed Krag. I had to go back and pause it, but sure enough the bolt handle is on the left. Tuff happens. Remember it's only TV/ a movie.

My apologies for my post above, Ratshooter.

Hey, no apologies needed. But thanks for the thought. I think we get caught up in thinking famous people are special and different. They aren't. They are just people just like the rest of us with the same failings and less than sterling morals. We hold actors, sports figures and others to a higher standard and when we find out they aren't all we imagined we are disappointed. I was star struck by the Rolling Stones when I was around 16 years old. After I learned more about Mick Jagger my hero worship was moderated a bunch. So now I just watch or listen to the entertainers but don't get my hopes up too high for them.

Found a donor gun on Fleabay if I can get it for a decent price.

Conners didnt do mag porn.....but Jhonny Crawford posed for playgirl,,, many years after the MickeyMouse teenie bop days....

Ohh boy, what memories, running from school back home to see the show. Praying, begging, getting my best grades to earn a cap gun or bb gun rifle. Once, I got the cap revolver colt copy, I fanned it for days, carry at home all the time. His moral was so strong, that impress the audience and I have to confess on me too when I was a kid. Of course the pasión for firearms still on me. Right or left at this point I guess is just a detail, in general one of kind, very few shows or people, gave so strong link to the world of firearms another legend, allow me to remark without the intention of rail off the threat would be Jerry Miculek.
