I would like to have one of their base pins. Do they make one specifically for the ROA, or does the one for the BH fit the ROA?

The answer to your question was posted on page 23.

I still wonder why the ROA didn't use a spring-loaded detent pin that you push in, to release the cyl pin?
To my mind, that would have made more sense.
Or am I missing something?

One can't be sure what Bill Ruger was thinking at the time he designed it. But perhaps between being a black powder gun and being built for longevity, the powder fouling and any corrosion could have interfered with a spring-loaded detent functioning properly in the long run.
And maybe the way that it's designed provides more surface bearing area to hold the pin securely.

That's pretty cool. As an emblem a silver dime is available, affordable and date means something. I wish gold didn't cost more than myrrh. Putting a dime sized gold coin in each grip would be worth more than the pistol.

Jaymo, If you look at a standard Ruger single action base pin you'll notice it has a small relief cut where the base pin retaining screw fits. Now look at your ROA base pin. Instead of a circular cut relief it has just slightly less than half it's diameter cut away and at an angle to boot. It has considerable pressure put on it when using the ram to seat balls and conicals. The standard base pin configuration would never hold up for long under that much stress. Bill never envisioned conversion cylinders and cowboy action shooting with the ROA, it was designed for us hunters in mind. Hope this answers some of your questions.

Regarding how to post pictures of my Ruger Old Armys

Hi there folks, can someone help me out on how exactly I can post pictures of my Old Armys so I can join the club.Would like to share photos of my rare 5 1/2 inch adjustable sights blue model. One of a very few made by Ruger.Has a factory authentication letter to accompany it that I would also like to post as a picture.Still trying to figure out how to post pictures......Joe

Hi foks,

I was trolling around on the web and googled Ruger Old Army For Sale Canada and came up with this ad: RUGER OLD ARMY 45 cal. cap & ball pistol, never fired, $450; 100 round of ammo & powder, $25. 509-927-3032 Spokane Valley
at this URL: http://www.exchangepublishing.com/

This is no good to me as nobody will ship handguns to Canada, :cuss::banghead:but the price seems pretty good for an unfired ROA.

Good Luck

Here's another ad. Same website, same phone number. This one says he's got a stainless ROA never fired for $500
RUGER OLD ARMY .45 cal. cap ball stainless pistol, never fired, $500; S&W .32 cal. nickel pocket pistol, made 1904, excellent condition, $400; .45 cal. partially built muzzleloader rifle, $150; 3 deep sea fishing rod & reels, 2 Garcia Kingfisher, 1 Diawa G60, $75 each. 509-927-3032

I called the seller and asked him if the ROA was still available and he said yes. But when I asked him if he would ship it to Connecticut, he said no and abruptly hung up on me.
I called him right back to see if he would discuss it but he didn't answer.
My conclusion is that he will only sell it face to face.

That's a pretty lame response from someone that would like to sell something. Must have been having a bad day and maybe you asked him something that 1000 people asked him about prior to your call.

Welcome Powder Keg! Sweet...a David Clements 50 cal! :D

Wow....that's where I want to go. I have everything but the octagon barrel and sights.
On one of the blue pictures....are those fixed sights?

Could you give me some detail on those?

blue frame fixed sights

the blue frame gun was originally 7 1/2 fixed. David mills cuts or however he does his magic a small portion out of rear and uses a small screw Allen head to anchor his sight it is only done on a gun by gun basis in house because it is a very complex cut more info is on his web site I will post another plc soon :)

where can I get a high quality loading tool short of having one made I do not want to bend a cyl pin

That's got an interesting look to it. If it works well with all cap-n-ball revolvers then that's a pretty good price ($69).
