The real reason the Second Amendment was ratified, and why it says "State" instead of "Country" (the Framers knew the difference - see the 10th Amendment), was to preserve the slave patrol militias in the southern states, which was necessary to get Virginia's vote. Founders Patrick Henry, George Mason, and James Madison were totally clear on that . . . and we all should be too.

Do you have a less biased, more scholarly article supporting your position?

"State" is the term used to mean country. It is still used in that manner. Ever heard the title of the United States' "top diplomat"? She is called the Sec'y of State and runs the Department of State. You think that means Virginia? Or is it Ohio?

Dear mrreynolds,
If there is one thing I have learned during my stay on this earth, it is that written history is not necessarily accurate. If you were there and know this is fact, please let me know.

Woooow... I guess the Federalist Papers and all that stuff mean nothing then. This article clearly was what they meant. I wish they had written down what they meant by the 2nd Amendment back then, instead of leaving it to THIS guy... geez.

Mr. mrreynolds

You posted the article for discussion.

If you have not, please read the "Federalist Papers."

Read the writings of Jefferson, Adams...

The second amendment had nothing to do with slavery!

A little research on your part (if not completed) would contribute to a more intelligent post and the ability to articulate a formidable argument to the link.

What a silly piece of pseudo-research he's written. He redefines words and cherry picks his facts to suit his thesis. His Progressive thesis.

"Thom Hartmann is a New York Times bestselling Project Censored Award winning author and host of a nationally syndicated progressive radio talk show. "

Do you get your "facts" from Danny Glover, or does he get them from you?

Totally without merit.

Why do folks help spread such obvious, bogus nonsense? Some points:

  • Mr. Justice Scalia in the majority opinion in Heller discussed the history and intent of the Second Amendment at some length, and this fanciful "to preserve slavery" notion never came up.

  • In many ways, the Second Amendment has a very long history. It's not as if the Founders all woke up on morning and decided that it would be a good idea for ordinary, honest citizens to be armed.

During the several hundred years prior to the adoption of the United States Constitution, it was in general widely understood and accepted English tradition that ordinary, honest people have arms to be used for, at various times and under various conditions, self defense, defense of their communities, prevention of crime and apprehension criminals, assisting in maintaining public order, defense of the nation, and (yes) hunting. Of course from the age of the Tudors through the age of the Hanovers (and beyond), at certain times some rights were circumscribed, often for one group or another, depending on who was in power.

The foregoing is covered in greater detail in Joyce Lee Malcolm's excellent book, Guns and Violence, the English Experience (Harvard University Press, 2002). I've just ordered her earlier book, To Keep and Bear Arms: The Origins of an Anglo-American Right (Harvard University Press, 1996).

  • See also here for insights into the original intent of the Second Amendment.

Strangely enough if the 2nd Amendment is abolished we will all become slaves.. From reading the endless writings of the Founding Fathers, it certainly appears that owning guns was for the preservation of personal freedoms and liberties, as well to keep checks and balances on the government which is viewed as corruptible and imperfect to allow its citizens to abide by these personal freedoms and liberties.

If anything I would say that the denial of 2nd Amendment rights to blacks in the South was one of the greatest forms of slavery. The JPFO has a video about this phenomenon.

I'm not arguing anything nor am I taking a side on anything I merely posted an article. You take the information and decide what is relevant and what is not. I don't have to do anything or formulate any opinion.

Revisionist history at work I am afraid. As others have correctly noted, go read the Federalist papers. The article listed NO sources of their information whatsoever. Once again, revisionist history
