and people wonder how the bad guys find the right house to hit.

You don't even need an address of a place you want to case, these idiots provide that for you. Amazing!

that is some BS. They just lost my business for ever. Not that i purchase a lot from them, but still

That guy lives right down the street from me!

Likewise.
I wrote to their tech and to customer service detailing the problem. Undoubtedly they thought they were providing a good service but made it too simple. The form should require your order number.

I too sent them an e-mail when I learned of this. I received this reply:
Thank you for your email.
We are in the process of attempting to change the information on the web site. Thank you for the suggestion. If you have any questions, please contact us.

Thanks for shopping the Guide!

I hope they follow through. I found them to have good prices on ammo, fast shipping, but this must change.

I wouldn't hold my breath. They've known about the problem for at least two weeks and haven't changed it. How long does it take to change a web page?

ANOTHER WOW!!!

Why would they even offer up such information (especially with the home address), on the Internet? Incredibly stupid and really dangerous. You may as well hang a giant sign on the front of your house saying: "GUNS HERE-OWNER'S AT WORK-FEEL FREE TO BREAK IN AND TAKE WHAT YOU WANT!" Glad I never ordered from them.

For a production e-commerce site that generates millions of dollars in revenue and therefore must work 100%, all the time? The release cycle for new content is probably well over ten working days.

The development change to content is the most trivial aspect of the job. You have to re-test everything that touches the change to make sure that you didn't break something else in the process.

Give 'em a little time....

How long does it take to change a web page?

Only minutes.
To change how the script interacts with a large database can take longer to do, even longer to test plus it's not *web designer* stuff. May require an ASP or PERL programmer and the Sysop.

My name and orders came up. I attached the link and emailed them. I told them I would never purchase from the again until it's corrected. I also referenced the discussion on the board.

I know a little about e-commerce and software development. :)

They could just take that page offline until they test and released a new one that is less promiscuous.

If anyone really needed their history sent to them before the new self-service page was done, they could call and have it emailed or faxed back to them.

If Sportsman's Guide didn't know that, well, they probably also didn't know that leaving customer information readily available to brute force attacks is a bad idea. Hmm.. Maybe they don't understand either concept, huh? :)

Here's the response I received:

Hello Allen,
Thank you for your email.
I apologize for the frustration caused by our online order status. We had made a change to our order status page due to numerous complaints that the older function was too difficult to operate. Since that time we have received a high volume of feedback, compliments and complaints, regarding the ease of visibility. The order status page is set up to locate by last name and zip code but if there is more than one in that area it will prompt for the matching billing address as well. We would like to think that our customers would not be randomly picking various names and zip codes to view other customers orders, but we can understand apprehension caused by the ability to do so.

At this time we do not have plans to change the status lookup, however all complaints we receive regarding this are being passed on to the corporate level for consideration as we have come into a high volume as of late. Please be assured that while we are unable to change it at this time, it is something that customer service is following through on. All order information automatically expires 90 days after any order activity.
If you have any questions, please contact us.
