I like the idea of the cap guards. Only thing looks like it would make loading very slow and you would have to put the cap guards on with the cylinder off. I just dont see how you could do it with the cylinder on.

To remove the cap guards you could probably make up a fork that you could slide in and lift up.

Correct Scrat, I load the cylinder off the gun. I don't use the cap guards when shooting a lot of rounds at the range. I have to pry the guards off after I have shot, again with the cylinder off the gun. The guards are very useful if you keep the gun loaded for a long period of time.

With a dremel cutting wheel. I haven't fired it yet but I think I will probably have to fashion some kind of extenstion on the loading lever to load it.

twaits,

I have a short barreled Walker. When I loaded it on the frame, I used a piece of pipe, with an appropraite ID, as a lever extension. I have since removed the loading lever from the revolver and load off the frame.

Dovetail a front sight on that beast and go shooting!

Strawhat,

That's my plan. I have the original front sight. Would that work or does it need to be taller? It might look good with an old mexican silver coin for a front sight.
What is your loading method for loading the cylinder off the gun?
Do you have a picture of your short Walker posted here?

I load off the gun by placing the cylinder on a flat surface, charging the chambers, adding a wad, and then placing a ball in each cahmber. I use a jag from a ramrod to seat the balls but some use a lever styled loader.

I have posted a photo in this thread before but I don't remember where it is so here is a newer photo.

Short Mort and a couple of friends.

With the lever in place,

IMGP1003.gif

This is the way the revolver came to me. After the first shot, the front sight disappeared and I have fitted a new sight. I have also removed the lever as has been discussed.

Still a work in progress...

I polished the blue off the cylinder as original Walkers had no blue on the cylinders. I think it looks pretty good this way. My next step is to get a front sight on it. Any suggestions? Some people have recommended using an old silver coin which I think might look kind of good. What is approximately the right hieght sight for a barrel of this length?

When adding a front sight start with a taller one. At least as tall as the original if not a bit taller. These revolvers tend to shot high so start with a sight that will give you enough room to bring the impact up to where you want it. I will often fit a dovetailed base with a wooded balde just to get the height figured out, then fit my final blade.

Walker with new grips

Just wanted something different so here it is a Walker with elk horn grips:what:
